have a new laptop (~1 month old) and suddenly (in the past 3-4 days) logging on takes forever...it is setup with the Welcome screen where we just select which user to log on...after i click my user name and hit enter it takes at least 30 seconds for it to leave the Welcome screen and get to the desktop...

this is running XP Pro sp2, Dual Core 2 @ 2.0GHz, 1GB RAM...HDD has 66GB free out of 75GB...

sounds like you have too many items on your startup menu. why don't you post a hijack log and have a pro look at it.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG, then click OK - "Startup" tab.

How many entries are listed there that have a checkmark next to them?

My guess is that computer has too many unnecessary programs that are loading during startup and running in the background.

If you just bought it a month ago, it's probably still loaded with all the demo and time-limited crap that comes with a new computer. PC Decrapifier 1.7 might be of some use to you.
