Last year, I set up my laptop with an Admin. username, but no password. Last night, I downloaded/installed the Windows critical updates (express install) and then rebooted. Now the laptop is asking for the administrative username and password. I have tried the username I assigned, but Windows will not accept it. I am using WinXP with SP2.

Could the updates have caused this problem? Is there a way I can get into my laptop? This is all very strange, and I have never had this type of problem before. Please help.

Thank you,
J

I've had a couple of users call me and describe the same issue. It seems to be related to the latest WinXP update. I haven't done any hands on with it yet but we devised this "workaround". Restart your PC and get into the "safe mode" menu by tapping the F8 key on startup. Then choose Last Known Good Configuration. That should solve the problem. Don't install the update for now. Maybe someone in the forum has heard of a fix for this. It's obviously something that's written to the registry.
