Linux/UNIX Mount point Implementation

I'm working on Samba debugging, and I'm collecting as much information as I can find about how Linux/UNIX implements mountpoints. Any information or resources are welcome.

Would I be correct in thinking that this is a project for some manner of study course

No, I'm working to implement a patch due to inconsistent mountpoint behaviors, and I'm trying to find a way to script a translation from Linux mount points to Windows mount points, so their behavior will be consistent. I've been conducting extensive research and have still not found very many useful resources.
