Linking 2 PCs by wireless

Hi,

this may be a bit of a ******* question but here goes. At home I have a desktop PC and a Toshiba Notebook which I would like to connect to each other via a Wireless Link. I know I need either a PCI or USB means of making the desktop wireless compatible and a PCMCIA wireless card for the Notebook but do I need a wireless router as well?

The reason I ask is that every "guide" to setting up a wireless network presumes I want to connect to the internet from my 50 assorted PCs i have in my house (according to their pictures :) ) via a wireless network. But I don't. I just want to my desktop & notebook to talk to each other so I can swap files etc.

I know I could do this with cable but I'd rather avoid that route as I don't want cables everywhere.

thanks in advance.

Hi Gogs

As far as i'm aware this is possible if you have wireless NIC's that support ad-hoc mode. If so you can set up an ad-hoc connection between the two.
