Linking 2 PCs by wireless

Hi,

this may be a bit of a ******* question but here goes. At home I have a desktop PC and a Toshiba Notebook which I would like to connect to each other via a Wireless Link. I know I need either a PCI or USB means of making the desktop wireless compatible and a PCMCIA wireless card for the Notebook but do I need a wireless router as well?

The reason I ask is that every "guide" to setting up a wireless network presumes I want to connect to the internet from my 50 assorted PCs i have in my house (according to their pictures :) ) via a wireless network. But I don't. I just want to my desktop & notebook to talk to each other so I can swap files etc.

I know I could do this with cable but I'd rather avoid that route as I don't want cables everywhere.

thanks in advance.

you don't need wireless router. However, with the router, it works better. if you don't use the router, you need to 1. setup AdHoc. 2. setup ICS for the intrenet access sharing. quoted from www.chicagotech.net.

How to use Ad Hoc connection

802.11b (WiFi) cards can communicate in two different modes, Ad Hoc- for direct card-to-card communication and Infrastructure - for communication through an Access Point. If your wireless network doesn't have an AP, you will need to set your cards to use "AdHoc" mode. When setup Ad Hoc mode, make sure all wireless clients use the same mode, channel, web keys and SSID. You may need to setup TCP/IP manually if you don't have DHCP.
