HI,
First time poster here.

Rebooted my laptop (W98) and received an error message, "cannot access configuration files". I tried booting off my restoration CD and also reloading windows without reformatting HD. I tried reloading drivers off of the CD as well, to no avail. At some point I received a message that line 1O of my configsys file was either corrupt or missing.
Do I to edit my config.sys file? What should line 10 read as?
Any ideas on what to do? I really appreciate any help.

Windows 98/98SE normally doesn't need anything in the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.

Copy and paste the contents of your CONFIG.SYS file here so we can review it.

Go to Start, the Run, then type in:

sysedit

Then go to your Config.sys file, and scroll down to the 10th line (from the top).

This should tell you what's loading. You might want to copy and paste the contents here (as Flavallee suggested).

If you just want to stop that line from being read, then place a semi-colon ( ; ) at the start of the line (far-left side).

As Flavallee indicated, you probably don't need whatever is in there. Config.sys is really for DOS usage and loading DOS drivers (i.e. - setting buffer size, setting number of files that can be open at the same time, etc.).

Thanks, Columbo. I was going to mention placing a semi-colon( ; ) in front of that line, but decided to wait and see what the contents of the file were first.

3DayEvntr, placing a semi-colon in front of that line prevents it from being read by Windows during startup, which is why Columbo suggested you do it.

I'd still like to see the contents of the file.
