I just recently got cable internet connection, and I have a lap-top which i wanted to connect to wirelessly to the internet. I bought a wireless router today, and ran the entire wizard and everything seemed to be working fine. I can connect to the internet by ethernet through a port in the wireless router, like I am doing now. My problem is, I find my network and try and connect, then a message comes up saying limited or no connectivity, I live in a apartment complex and I know I can connect wirelessly with this lap-top because I have used my friends signal across the street. My network has excellant signal stregth but doesn't connect to the internet..... I use norton and have allowed the IP address give to the personal firewall, also disabled windows firewall, with the same result... I am pretty stumped and uncertain what I should do, any suggestions????

Thanks

JM

Start by disabling encryption on the router to get a connection established, then enable encryption as a separate step.

Sounds like you might have another program acting as the 'network' selection program for you. Go into the network devices and try to disable the hard wired device, then try the wireless again.

Did you give it a name other than the default name? Can you get to the router setup page? Also, at a command prompt (start, run, cmd, enter) type ip release /all, then enter, then ip renew /all and see what that does.

If you changed the default SSID to the router, and selected to NOT broadcast the network name, you'll need to add that into the network settings as well, as if it's not being broadcasted, you won't see it in the available devices, nor be able to connect to it.

I'd suggest going with everything generic until you get it set up and running.

Also, you shouldn't have to "install" it with the disk.

What should not be looking for a proxy server, The network I made is in the Wireless Networks that I can choose, but I just can't connect to it, do you think it is a bad router, I was actually able to connect to it last night for like 1-2 minutes, then I couldn't connect again, this was after i rebooted the computer and reset the power for both the router and modem....

Thanks!

Sounds like your router isn't online... Who is your internet provider? and is it cable or dsl?
Do what Candy said and start generic, get rid of the software you installed for the router and use the windows xp wireless connection as a start. You must hard wire your laptop to the router to access it and change the settings. Check the status link of the router and be sure you have a public IP address, if you're not sure, call the ISP.

Some providers require the registration of the mac address of the router. With cable modems, changing network devices requires a reboot of the modem. With mine specifically, I need to unplug the power for an hour before I can change routers.

If it's a PPPOE connection, the you require a username and password from your internet provider.

Comcast Cable, I actually am running a ethernet cord out of the wireless router to the lap-top now for internet connections... I'm not really sure how to get rid of to router setting because it doesn't look like anything was actually installed on the computer, such as no new programs or nothing on the desktop,
