Eric has a router IP but donna has an external IP

how do you have the modem and router connected
check you are connected from the modem to the WAN/Internet input on the router

would you give exact details of the connections

sorry confused - is this cable or phoneline and you seem to have the cable modem connected to cable modem

the way it needs to be setup

Modem ==> router Wan/Internet/Modem connection
and PCs connected to the LAN ports

so how does that all work again - simple diagram maybe

you have a cable supplied broadband service and a ADSL telephone broadband
so why , and how are you planning to use

telephone ==> adsl modem ===> ? ==> to do what
Cable ==> cable modem ===> ? ==> to do what

where do you want to put the linksys wrt54g

OK so lets do one thing at a time - I will be offline any minute now - but other will pickupi'm sure

Donna
just with the Cable ==> cable modem ==> donna
so that should all work - the ipconfig /all looked good
if not
lets see the ipconfig /all and ping tests - see below
keep that on a seperate post

next Eric
telephone ==> adsl modem ==> router ==> wireless
the eric ipconfig /all looked OK as you had a IP
But lets see the PING tests also an xirrus screen shot
what firewall do you have it maybe blocking
Also are all the lights on the modem and the router correct

------------------------------------------------------------------------
{ipconfig /all}
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here
We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results here
-> Start
-> (XP - enter the following in the RUN box)
cmd /k ipconfig /all
-> (Vista or Windows 7 - enter the following in the Search box)
cmd /k ipconfig /all

A black box will appear on the screen -
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy

then reply here and
control key + V to paste
------------------------------------------------------------------------
{Ping Tests}
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

Start> Run {search bar in Vista}> CMD to open a DOS window and type:

Type the following command
Ping {plus the number thats shown against the default gateway shown in above ipconfig /all}
Post back the results
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping google.com
Post back the results
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping 209.183.226.152
post back results
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste
------------------------------------------------------------------------
{run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector} Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php
Direct link to the program is here http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifi_download_redirect.php
Then run and install the program
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

that looks like you can see the wireless - log into the router and change the channel to 11 - that will avoid interference

now post back the ipconfig /all and ping tests

so you are not getting a ip from the router - the ip you have is when windows cannot see a dhcp service - could be a few reasons - the router does not have it enabled - firewall blocking
if you connect with a cable to the router can you post an ipconfig /all again

check the router is setup for DHCP
what firewall do you have on the PC ? norton or anything like that

also try with a cable connected to the router and PC
as the pc starts keep tapping F8 - a menu should appear choose
safemode with networking

see if that works

are you connected by cable to the router ?

you may need to reset the router back to factor default
