Laptop sound keeps turning off

Disclaimer: I am no computer expert, also new to this site so hello, and I've also already searched extensively for solutions before posting this, and tried them, to no avail. also, I have an HP Envy, Windows 8, 8 gigs of RAM (if that's relevant) and the name of my soundcard (or what I think is my soundcard) is IDT High Definition Audio CODEC. Now onto the problem:

This started happening a few months ago. Usually when I'm listening to music or playing a game, the sound will sometimes go off completely after a while, just suddenly. The sound goes off regardless of whether I'm using earphones or laptop speakers. Some other symptoms of this are that the volume slider will not go up or down, or do it very slowly, like if I hold it down it only goes down from 100 to 96. Also, the mute blinker light stops working. Basically the entire sound system, and maybe soundcard, stops responding. If I try to fiddle with it too much, it also affects computer speed in general, and it starts making noises and getting warm. The only TEMPORARY fix I have found is to either restart, or close then open my laptop lid twice. If done only once, the volume slider and mute blinker start working again, but there's still no sound. I have already tried disabling and enabling my sound driver. When I do this, the little caution icon comes up next to it and it doesn't run properly, but upon restarting it's fine (though it never fixes the sound problem permanently). Same thing when I reinstall the thing. So I think that the sound driver might be corrupted or something, but I don't know what to do. Another possible problem might just be that the laptop just can't handle it and the driver stops responding, but that's odd since I bought this laptop just a year ago, it does other things completely fine. Also running a YouTube video shouldn't be that hard. I haven't found solutions elsewhere and I signed up just to ask this one question, so I really desperately need help. I'll be leaving for college soon, and I won't have my desktop then, so I hope you understand my situation. Thanks in advance for any help :)

I should've mentioned this earlier, but yes my sound driver is updated.
What is the complete model number? HP Envy 15-????. Found this :http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Audio/HP-Envy-15-3040nr-Sound-Stopped-working/td-p/2673061

It is an HP Envy 15, yes. Also the processor is an Intel i7 4700MQ if you need to know. The problem listed here is that the sound doesn't work at all, mine does but it just cuts off at random times. However, I looked at the solution, and am currently trying it out. It mentions that after I uninstall, load the defaults, and start back up, it will set up the drivers and I will have to open IDT Installer from my downloads. This was not in my downloads, so I downloaded it on my own (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC for Windows 8.1 64-bit). When I ran this as administrator, it brings up an error message with the file path, and underneath it says "the extended attributes are inconsistent". Also, now the audio doesn't work at all, neither does the temporary fix.
Oh I just saw what you meant by Model Number. Here's what I found:

Product NameL HP Envy 15 Notebook PC
Product Number (is this what you mean?): E1P04AAR
Serial Number: 6CG412015C
UPDATE: @lynx1021 I mentioned that now the audio didn't work at all. I restarted it a second time, but this time normally, and without going into the BIOS and all. Before I did what you suggested, it said my driver was up to date. Now, it gives me the option to update, but gives me an error, so I can't update. HOWEVER, the original issue seems to be solved. I think somehow rolling back the driver seems to have solved it. The exact opposite of what was intended in the solution you linked, but I thank you regardless! If I need to fix the update driver error that's a separate issue, it doesn't seem to be causing problems now and may have even fixed the problem, perhaps the update was corrupted or something but I don't know how that happened. I am going to wait maybe another day, or a few hours, until I mark this issue as solved, because I have to be sure that the audio doesn't cut out again. Even if it turns out it hasn't been solved, thanks for the link anyway. I've listened to complete songs and played a game for about 15 minutes right now and the audio doesn't cut (before this it would turn off after maybe 5 minutes, but sometimes it could take up to half an hour for it to happen for the first time) so I think it's solved but I still need to make sure.

I am glad thing worked out. I know some people that have windows 10 and the windows update decided to update a driver causing major problems and rolling back the driver was the only thing that worked. I downloaded a program called "Driver booster" on my laptop and it said I have 11 drivers that can be updated but I am not having any problems so "what ain't broke , don't fix it" !

Yup, it's much better now. Not perfect, but far better. Sound cuts out not more than once or twice a day, and it only happens when I've been playing very demanding games for a few hours. Also, the fix is much easier now, just need to take it in and out of sleep mode once rather than twice. All in all, it's no longer a serious problem like it used to be, so thanks! Marking as solved.
