Laptop Shows black screen after BIOS update ( HELP )

My sister asked me to update her laptop (Toshiba Satellite Pro C660D-1GR; from Windows 7 pro (64-bit) to Windows 10 pro (64-bit).
So I did.

Then I went to Toshiba's UK website to check if there were any drivers I needed to install for Windows 10. The only one was a BIOS update (to BIOS v1.70). I have no idea what the previous BIOS version number was.

So I run the update application within Windows 8. Phoenix Technologies WinPhlash starts and then halfway through the update, the whole thing freezes.

The trackpad wouldn't move the cursor or anything. I had no option but to unplug the laptop from the wall and remove the battery. The laptop is not under warranty.

Of course, now it won't turn on. It beeps once when I press the power button, but the system doesn't turn on. A couple of minutes later, it sounds one long beep then two short beeps. It then keeps repeating this "one long beep, two short beeps" sequence every couple of minutes.

I have Googled and read website after blog after forum post, but nothing works. The links to the software suggested on these websites/blogs/forums are usually dead, so I cannot try what they suggest.

The most common solution is the Phoenix Crisis Recovery Tool. I have managed to download v1.0.0.4 which is supposed to enable me to make a bootable USB key. The version of this tool that I have downloaded is meant to be for a Lenovo ThinkPad X200. I have the correct BIOS.rom for the Satellite Pro C660 (which I have renamed BIOS.wph and copied to the relevant folder).

I have followed all instructions, but it doesn't seem to work. Some sites say if this happens then I have the wrong version of phlash16.exe. Certain other websites say that HP Boot Disk USB Utility should be used, but I don't know how to use this.

What I really need is a definitive foolproof step-by-step guide of what to do, with links to the tools/files to be used for this model of laptop. I will be following this blindly (as I don't really understand what each step does, I just do it with no understanding,) so if anyone can help me with this, please write a guide as if for a complete idiot!!

If anyone can help me with this, I would appreciate it so much. I am really in a sticky situation - I can't really afford to pay a Toshiba ASP to repair it, and I certainly can't afford a new laptop. But I also couldn't bring myself to tell my sister, "It's broken, deal with it!"

I believe what you actually have is a Toshiba Satellite C660D-1GR (PSC1YE-035008EN) laptop which came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
If you do, THIS is the menu that you would've navigated through to obtain a BIOS update.

1.60-WIN is the only BIOS version listed and is dated 01/06/2012.

What's the exact and complete part number on your sister's laptop?
Where exactly did you obtain BIOS version 1.70 from?

My apologies you're right about the Toshiba info. And the bios update is 1.60

Anyhow, I still cannot access the laptop with its black screen

Is this the part number on that laptop or is it a different number?

The Toshiba Satellite C660D-1GR doesn't have support for Windows 10, so it should've been left with Windows 7 and should not have had a BIOS update attempted in Windows 10.
I fear you either installed the wrong BIOS update or the one you installed went bad.
When the wrong BIOS update is installed or a BIOS update goes bad, the end result is usually a non-working computer.

Yes that's the part number. I used a USB to install windows 10 and it worked fine. Apart from the BIOS, which is most likely not supported or the wrong one.

Any solutions?..

Thanks for the confirmation on the part number and model number of that laptop.
Windows 10 will install in it, but it's not a supported Windows version because of its age.

If the wrong BIOS update was installed or if a correct BIOS update went bad during the install process, it leaves you with a non-working laptop.
Trying to reinstall Windows 7 or Windows 10 won't work because the BIOS is completely independent of a Windows operating system.
Unless someone else here has a way to resolve your issue, you now have a large heavy door stop. :oops:

You would need to ship that laptop to Toshiba to have it repaired (if it can still be done), and the cost would be more than what that laptop is worth.

From what I've seen, other people have this problem on the toshiba forum and all they had to do is replace its bios chip.

That's why it would need to go to Toshiba - who would know how to replace the BIOS chip in that laptop's motherboard.

You're asking me for a miracle fix, and I can't give it to you.

If it won't work with a Usb stick you will need a Usb floppy drive, it should work then.

Hello, my apologies for the extremely late reply.

Tried it, wouldn't work on windows 10 for my other PC. Don't know why. From what I've seen, it worked with 7. Thanks for the advice though. Ill just replace the BIOS chip.

The thing is you will have to find a source for the correct Bios chip and it will have to contain the correct bios already and then most likely the old chip will have to be unsoldered and the new one soldered onto the motherboard.

You have to use a USB stick of 2GB or less capacity so it will format as FAT.
Or you can use a Usb floppy drive and a floppy disk.

If you send it to Toshiba (or anyone else) for repair get an estimate first, it won't be cheap.
