Hi all,

missus recently purchased new laptop to go with her desktop. She wants access to desktop (with windows 2000 service pack 4) from laptop(xp) via wireless, (limited IPs etc etc). I set UP a wap, reconfigured firewall, downloaded MS client server to desktop, and set up remote access, (after some surfing). 3 days later, i CAN access laptop from desktop via remote access but CANNOTaccess desktop from laptop, what am i missing?

Any help much appreciated.

some MS client remote access software i downloaded form the MS website onto the windows 2000 machine. Do you need to know exactly what?
Only if you need to know how to fix the issue.

That's the problem. You have the client but not the host. You are trying to access a Windows2000 computer.

If you want there, I'm not sure there is a Remote Desktop host.

A solution would be to use something like UltraVNC. That has both the host and client you could use on the Windows2000 computer.

Again, that is the client, not the host.

The page from Microsoft regarding this even states:
"this software allows older Windows platforms to remotely connect to a computer running Windows XP Professional with Remote Desktop enabled."

So it won't allow you to connect to that Windows2000 computer using Remote Desktop since there is no Remote Desktop host for Windows2000.

bob, why more complicated? is it not just a case of upgrading to xp pro? Would remote access not then be available as an option as per the set up on the laptop? Expense not an issue as i have an unopened copy from a machine at work. Or perhaps my lack of knowledge shows on the upgrade issue. Your comments would be apprecited.

For starters, typically a clean install is more reliable than an upgrade. But if you want to give it a try that is certainly an option. Make sure there are XP drivers for all the hardware on the computer. Likely this is the case but better to be certain and have them downloaded ahead of time.

The information that you already have an unopened copy of XP at work was not made known until your last post.
