Recently my laptop is unable to boot up. The screen is blank and then frozen. I have to turn it off, unplug everything, and then wait for an hour to restart it again (and then it can boot up as normal). It all started last week after I installed Windows Media Player 10. I tried to restore the system back to a week ago, but the problem is still there.

Also, it always gives out a short "beep" sound after the laptop is ON for about 1 hour. Does it indicate that my mother board is having problem, or is it the hard disk?

Could someone please help! The problem is getting worse, the time taken to wait before a working boot up is getting longer. Thanks a lot!

Hi and welcome to TSG,

Please do this. Click here: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe
to download HijackThis.

Close all open windows and open HijackThis. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished, the scan button will change to “Save Log”. Click on “Save Log” and then save it to Notepad. Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET, most items that appear in the log are harmless or even needed.

Does the boot problem occur on a cold start, first of the day? Or, is this after the laptop had already been running before? Does your fan run at high speed constantly? Is the laptop hot to the touch around the CPU area? Is the air coming out of the fan particularly hot? It could be overheating.

This does not happen on a cold start. However, even if I had only turn on my laptop for 1 minute and then restart, it still cannot boot up. So it doesn't seem to be a matter of overheating, as I have been using this laptop for 2 years and this never happens before.

I doubt any of this would be responsible for your problems but let's clean it up anyway.

I recommend that you replace Bullguard with a more reliable anti-virus program.

Rescan with HijackThis, close all browser windows except HijackThis, put a check mark beside these entries and click “fix checked.”

Do a couple of on-line virus scans at these links:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ - be sure to check auto clean before scanning,

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

Reboot and post a new Hijack This log and the log from Panda.
