Hi, here is my problem, I have Windows xp on both pc and laptop, netgear router, wireless usb adaptor for pc and wireless card for pc. I have been trying for ages to get LAN to work on laptop. I have installed software on pc for router and its working fine, icon bottom right showing up. Also Netgear wireless usb adaptor and software icon showing up on pc green looks fine.
On laptop wireless lan is on, lan network cable unplugged. I have been into ipconfig on both and here are results:
Laptop:

subnet mask 255.255.255.0

then stuff about tunnel adapter

Ok now i can see that they are not the same, I have no idea what to do to put this right. My daughter used the laptop at a friends house and connected instantly to internet, using belkin router, so I am puzzled not sure were I have gone wrong but i would appreciate some help. Thanks venusgirl

have you a secure wireless network and need to enter the passcode

do you have a cordless phone - these will stop connection

opps its the lan you want to work NOT wireless and - i assume you daughter connected using the LAN and not wireless

control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Start, Run, CMD to open a DOS window and type:

IPCONFIG /ALL >C:\RESULT.TXT

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.

ok thanks for reply, first of all, not put in passwords yet, i am confused. I tried something else. I put the wireless usb adaptor into laptop and able to connect to internet, but then could not connect to internet on pc. I want the pc and laptop to work wireless with router, when my daughter connected the laptop at her friends this was via a wireless connection, also how do i check the wan connection on laptop, it is showing on but they are not talking to each other. Sorry to sound so vague but this is first time on networking, and I am finding all the jargon hard to take in thanks venusgirl

we know the laptop works ok on wireless and it works on your wireless

post an ipconfig /all - for bot PC and LAPTOP - make sure we know which is which in the post - see my post above on how to post the details

ok, having problems so i have decided to start again, might need some help with the next steps. This is what I have done. reset netgear router and put in software cd and connected to internet dhcp detected put in a wpa passphrase and all has gone well I think, I can connect to internet, now can you give me a break down of the next steps as this is were i am going wrong

ipv6 sometimes gives trouble, so on the laptop do
Start - Run - ipv6 uninstall - OK

You don't need ipv6 unless you are experimenting with it.

Hope no-one minds if I jump in on this discussion but I'd like to ask a question or 2 if you don't mind.

Are you able to connect to the internet on both PCs with your original configuration as described in your initial post?

If so, are you trying to get both PCs to see each other on your Local Area Network/Domain?

Is your goal to be able to use file and folder sharing?

There's obviously something mis-configured in the network settings on the laptop. The IP address assigned is not one that your router can give out. It's not the same subnet.

I don't know how to instruct you to check everything, but most of the responses I've read here don't apply since you're not getting a valid IP.

In my home network, 192.168.0.1 is the router's IP address. The subnet mask jibes (to me). Maybe I'm suffering from tunnel vision. I've spent weeks trying to figure out why, on my 3 computer LAN, I could only see 1 of them from the other 2 PCs. The PC that was visible on the LAN could not see the other 2 and the other 2 could not see each other. If this is the problem being described by venusgirl then I would have something further to add because I finally found the solution in the MS knowledge base. If this is not the problem, my apologies for butting in.

The computer that can get on the network has a default gateway of 192.168.1.1. The computer that can't get on the network has an unknown default gateway because you didn't provide that information. It does, however, have an IP address of 192.168.0.1 which is outside the range of what the router is giving out.

Double check that the laptop that cannot connect to the Internet at your house is configured to obtain an IP address automatically. Also that it is getting an IP address from your wireless router and not some other one. Either of these would explain why it has a different IP address than the one that works.
