Keys keep repeating in browser

2618 Views 13 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  managed
Hello,

I have been having an issue lately where unpressed keys will repeat when other keys are typed. For example, when I am typing in the address bar in my browser, if I type "y" to go to YouTube, the "(" character will appear after the initial "y," and repeat. Thus, the address bar will look like "y(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((..." where the ellipsis indicates that the parentheses continue appearing until I hit another key. This seems to happen when I hold a key down slightly longer than normal to type a single letter, like when I hold the backspace to delete a line or word, or even when I only want to type one letter, but hesitate slightly when pressing the key.

Notes:
-This only happens in my browser. Word documents are safe.
-It is not universal; it occurs in my Firefox and Chrome browsers, but not Edge.
-It is not always the same key that repeats; I have gotten "9," "(," "h," the caps lock, and the backspace repeating, to name a few common ones.
-It is typically not the key I just typed that repeats. It also does not seem to be proximity related, so I can type any key and any other key will repeat, not close to the initial key.
-If I get the repeating to stop by holding the backspace until the repeating keys stop typing, it will stay stopped--i.e. I can hold down whatever keys I want, and no extraneous keys will type or repeat. This changes if I switch windows, for example, between a Word doc and the browser. This seems to reset the repeating, and the next time I type in the browser, it will repeat.

Things I have already tried:
-Turning my antivirus on and off; still happens when the firewall and web checkers are off.
-Turning my extensions on and off; still happens with no extensions or plugins.
-Trying it in a private window. Still occurs.
-Clearing cookies.
-Checking my keyboard driver (no updates since 2018); I have NOT tried uninstalling and reinstalling.
-Resetting the battery.
-Running the keyboard troubleshooter.
-Updating my browsers.
-Restarting my laptop.

I'm not even sure if this is the correct forum to publish this in, but it is getting tiresome to have this keep happening, especially during class when I need to look things up quickly, or when trying to type emails. If there is any help anyone can provide I would be eternally grateful, and if there are any other questions I can answer, I would be glad to.

Try updating your set of browsers to include Firefox and see if the key repeats stop. Let us know what the outcome is.

Hi NaderHussain,

Thank you for the reply! I'm not completely sure what you mean. If you mean: see if the key repeating happens in Firefox, it does; Firefox is my main browser and where I notice the key repeats the most. If you mean: update Firefox, I have just done so; Firefox is up to date with version 92.0 installed.

Keys are, unfortunately, still repeating.
Run FF with all addons disabled. If the repeating stops, then you know that the problem is one of the addons.
Click on Help then Restart with addons disabled.

If you discover that an addon is the problem, open the addons and enable two addons at a time. If that works, allow two more addons until you discover what addon is causing the problem.

Note: I do not run Windows 10. I don't have Chrome installed and I'm using an ESR version of FF so I'm at v 78.14 which is up-to-date.

Thank you for this. My Firefox does have this option, though it looks a little different: under the Help section, I was able to refresh in "Troubleshooting Mode" which disabled add-ons, extensions, custom themes, etc.

Unfortunately, the problem still persists even with everything disabled, so I don't think it's an add-on.

But again, thank you for everyone's assistance so far.
Try using the on-screen keyboard as a test to see if that gives the same problem :- https://support.microsoft.com/en-us... open the On-Screen,screen until you close it.
It's probably a fault with the laptop's keyboard then, to confirm try plugging in an external Usb keyboard and see if that also works properly.

Has the laptop been dropped or had liquid spilt on it ?

I do not have a spare keyboard, but I will locate one and try this. Thank you!!

No, no drops or spills or anything like that...I thought it was the keyboard too until I noticed the issue ONLY happens in browsers (and only two different browsers, at that). It's unfortunate that this seems to be a keyboard issue as this laptop is only a year old. Thank you for the replies.
An update, of sorts: I have not yet found a second keyboard to try. I did, however, uninstall both built-in keyboards (P/S and HID) and allowed Windows to reinstall them - did nothing.

Then, I booted my laptop in safe mode and discovered that the problem does not occur!!!!!!!! Even when typing in a browser!!!

I booted again in safe mode with networking, and the problem began again.

What is happening between booting in safe mode and safe mode with networking that might explain this?
The only difference I'm aware of is that Network drivers will be loaded in 'Safe Mode with Networking', but not in 'Safe Mode'.

Using your computer's S/N in the first post this is the wireless network driver for it, please download it and then run it, which should re-install the driver(s) and may fix the problem :- https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles/ptyc03af406v90.exe

Got it. I did this and updated the drivers, which unfortunately dug me into a deeper hole - the repeating is no longer limited to my browser. Keys now repeat no matter where I type, even in Word. I think I may have to accept that this is a keyboard issue with my laptop, and take it in for a repair. Thank you all for your help here; this forum is amazing, and you all are commendable.
Well, I think I spoke too soon. As a last-ditch effort I toggled Sticky Keys on and off (they were already off, but I figured, what the heck?) and turned Filter Keys off. Problem has disappeared. No clue why or how. This laptop has had issues before and seems to be held together with spaghetti and hope. Fingers crossed this is the last of it...
I hope it continues to behave itself !
