Ok heres my problem, I recently downloaded a program which i couldn't get to work, long story i tried to get the newest version of the kernel.dll file. So i downloaded it and replaced it with the one in the folder, making sure i kept a copy of the original in a folder on my desktop...so everthing seemed to be working, however when I restarted the computer I get an error msg concerning the kernel.dll file and my computer wont get past the initial windows xp loading screen before it crashes then reboots. I'm getting quite desperate at this point as I cant figure out how to fix this problem, is there any way i can replace the new version of the kernell file with the old one thats on my desktop? Any help would be great!

Just adding this, when i restarted computers and made sure to select the option that it cant reboot on system failure it gives me this msg

Stop: c0000269 {Illegal Systtm DLL relocation}
The system Dll kernel32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly.
The relocation occured because the DLL dynamically Allocated memory occupied an address range reserved for windows system DLLs.

Try using System Restore to get back to just before this problem happened>

You will have to try to start up in Safe Mode if you have tried, well, you didnt tell us that! If you need directions, they are below, the same as for getting to the "Last Known Good Configuration" entry.....

If there was a major problem at that point, such as a virus or other going on, and you would rather not go back to it, let us know.

You would usually have a Restore Point just a day or so ago and depending on just when you did the file replacing, a Point just before that would probably be OK to use.

Here is how to do that:

http://bertk.mvps.org/

Try the "Last Known Good Configuration" bootup available when you use the F8 key at startup, before you see the XP logo, start tapping F8 just as you start, at the menu, with your down or up arrow key, move to "Last Known Good etc..." and press Enter once to try that.

If you have access to another pc running XP you might be able to put your hard drive in that as a Slave drive and copy the right file out of your .dll cache, or from the Desktop back, but I am not confident that would work. And, you need some knowledge of working inside the PC and how to hook up a Slave hard disk, jumpers, cables, how are you with those things?

NOTE>>>>You DON'T want to try to boot from your drive while it is in another XP machine!!!!!

There are other things to try, such as booting from your XP installation CDROM.
You can access the Recovery Console with that and move or copy the file back to it's correct location, or run the system file checking tool (chkdsk /r) are you at all familiar with that?

I am familiar with most of what you said, trying to restart with last known good confi... well that doesn't work either, problem is I have lost my original install cd's as I recently moved houses and they disapeared in the chaos. I thought of trying to get boot disks from the microsoft site, but I dont have another computer with a floppy drive... So im stuck trying to fix it with whats on the machine. Im gonna go see if i can borrow my friends xp cd, because if i can manage to get into recovery console i think i can fix it. Any help getting into it would be great.

Hi, You can use another XP cd to get to the Recovery Console, I have many times, and I keep a specially made boot CD made with Autostreamer on hand that has XP Service Pack 2 slipstreamed into the install, just for emergencies.

Look at these pages, copy the info to a Notepad text file or print it out, especially note the
Troubleshooting steps you can try , in case Restore will not work.

If for some reason Restore will not work in any mode, you will probably have to do a Repair Install.

Here is a good site with lots of help with doing that:
