My neighbor brought me their laptop last night saying that it will not boot up. It keeps coming up with
"A disk read error occurred"
Press ctrl-alt-del to restart.

They are/were running xp home. Here is what I have done so far.
1. inserted an xp setup disk
2. tried to re-format the drive
3. it has been on 0% for over 10 hrs now.
4. can't get xp to install/load

They don't have any of their disks that came with the laptop. oh, also it is a Gateway model.

Should I just tell them to cut it loose and go get another hard drive? Have already spent several hours trying to figure this out.

Thanks
