Millard Fillmore's the one that really burns my biscuits. What a real Know Nothing kinda guy.
In all fairness though Herbert Hoover 1929-1933 was probably the most hated. He was unfairly criticized for the Great Depression.
Needless to say he got stomped in the Presidential election of 1932.
Franklin D. Roosevelt popular vote 22,809,638 electoral votes 472
Herbert C. Hoover 15,758,901 and 59.
If we look at election results to determine popularity you'd have to look at Samuel J. Tilden v. Rutherford B. Hayes
Thomas Jefferson v. Aaron Burr v John Adams
(this one was back in the day when the second place finisher became vice president. Yea imagine Gore & Bush administration)
Nixon's run against Kennedy was close. Oddly enough Nixon's reelection campaign in '72 saw him win by a substantial margin. Ah but of course he was so freakin paranoid he threw it all away and resigned a year later.

Bush? nope. countries pretty evenly split.

PM'd to me from another TSG user.

Worst president in history?

The following appeared in the Durham, NC local paper as a letter to the editor. Please forward to all on your list as this will put things in perspective:

Liberals claim President Bush shouldn't have started this war. They complain about his prosecution of it. One liberal recently claimed Bush was the worst president in U.S history. Let's clear up one point: We didn't start the war on terror. Try to remember, it was started by terrorists BEFORE 9/11. Let's look at the "worst" president and mismanagement claims.

FDR led us into World War II. Germany never attacked us: Japan did. From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost, an average of 112,500 per year.

Truman finished that war and started one in Korea, North Korea never attacked us. From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost, an average of 18,333 per year.

John F. Kennedy started the Vietnam conflict in 1962. Vietnam never attacked us.

Johnson turned Vietnam into a quagmire. From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost, an average of 5,800 per year.

Clinton went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent, Bosnia never attacked us. He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three times by Sudan and did nothing. Osama has attacked us on multiple occasions.

In the two years since terrorists attacked us, President Bush has
liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled al-Qaida, put nuclear inspectors in Lybia, Iran and North Korea without firing a shot, and captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000 of his own people. We lost 600 soldiers, an average of 30 a year. Bush did all this abroad while not allowing another terrorist attack at home. Worst president in history?

The Democrats are complaining about how long the war is taking, but...

It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno to take the
Branch Davidian compound. That was a 51 day operation.

We've been looking for evidence of chemical weapons in Iraq for less time than it took Hillary Clinton to find the Rose Law Firm billing records.

It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the Marines to
destroy the Medina Republican Guard than it took Teddy Kennedy to call the police after his Oldsmobile sank at Chappaquiddick.

It took less time to take Iraq than it took to count the votes in
Florida!!!!

So LAN, does this TSG user that sent you this message use the rationale that because Presidents of the past initiated war, that is grounds for continued war?

And the time he/she claims it took to 'take Iraq'.........I'm unaware that hostilities had ended. Matter of fact, the deaths of US miliary servicemen seems to have increased at a greater pace since last May.

It's hard to say, because it is such a subjective question, and has different elements to it. Do you mean nationally, or internationally? I have to say, nationally, for me, it would be Richard Milhouse Nixon, but that is based upon the perspective of time.

Both Bush and Nixon surrounded themselves that with people I wouldn't even want as neighbors, let alone friends. Bush still has time to do more damage before we vote him out, so time will tell.

On an international basis, I think it very well could be Bush. This is the guy who asked the Brazilian President when visiting him "Do you have blacks, too?", that is the level of sophistication we're dealing with here. A two dimensional, uncomplicated, black and white view of the world from a US president could very well be perceived as very threatening to other nations, especially if they don't toe the line. After all, when you're told "you're either with us, or against us" that is not a veiled threat, it is a threat.

As a foreigner experienced in the use of the word "perception" (and having it fall on mostly deaf ears :p) my perception is that, GWB is without a doubt the worst President I have ever known, Nixon included!

I do not comment regarding any of his US Internal policies, I still maintain I do not have the experience or knowledge of them to offer fair comment on anything but their effects outside of the USA. But his policies as regards the rest of the world, all of it, every one of us non-chosen elite, are a disaster. His motivation for too many of them is to my taste suspect to say the least, and I am praying for anyone to remove him from power by legal means in the near future. Note I don't support the Democrats, just anyone who is not a Republican at this time! ;)

If it really were an open free democracy over there and the American dream of anyone becoming President is a reality, wouldn't now be a good time for your first Musslim Prezz? :)

What? Did Kerry announce that he has converted to Islam for the election? :D j/k

With Christians making up over 80% of the American population, I doubt that we'll vote in a Muslim anytime in the near future. Aspecially after 9/11.

If I may say, the title of the thread is "Is George Bush the least popular American president ever?"
Not which President do you hate the most.
Nixon was a weenie but he was popular and believe it or not a fairly good President in regards to job performance. His failure was his insecurity & distrust of others.
The last really big sweep in both popular vote & electoral votes was Reagan vs. Mondale.
You won't see another lopsided finish in popular votes until you go back to 1964 and Johnson versus Goldwater.
There have been more blowouts in regards to electoral votes. "Big Daddy" Bush - Dukakis comes to mind. However the popular votes were closer then you might think & that's what the threads about.
The popular vote doesn't usually show a mandate & I think it's a mistake for any political party to think otherwise. Just ask Newt he overstepped his bounds and paid a price for it.
This election is going to be very close save for some huge bombshell literal or figurative. I'd like to see both parties come to a real understanding that that is the "American landscape". Forget the party line or the pork you can send home. Act like an American not an asshat.

Oh Egg, I gotta take you to task for "Do you have blacks, too?".
I'd be amazed if there is even a shred of truth to that story. Bush can mangle the english lanuage like no other but I don't think he's an idiot.
I've heard that little story before else where but nobody can point to a reliable source like the AP or Reuters.

My God man you speak heresy! But you are correct. One of our more conservative Presidents and he opens and starts normalization of the largest communist country in the world. Like it or not his economic policy wasn't wrong either, he was just to damn paranoid.

Clinton is another example. His reform of the welfare system was and continues to be brilliant (I, however, don't believe he went far enough). Think of what our health care system could have been if he had turn his mind to it rather then asking Hillary. But like the character flaws in Nixon, Clinton couldn't keep his johnson under control so he'll go down in history (for the short term) as BJ Bill.

Kennedy started Vietnam? I guess you could say that if, you ignored 75% of the facts. France got us in that one.
FDR attacked Germany, they never attacked us?
LMAO..
Jesus man, what would you have happened? Let him take over the entire eastern hemisphere? Which he most certainly had the military might to do!
Truman started the Korean War?? Uhh.. France got us in that one too...
