Ipod/Itunes Question

Good day all. Apologies if this in the wrong forum.

My daughter go an Ipod for Christmas. I have no clue about these things (still using a portable cd player):D .
Are we stuck with Itunes or can we use othe types of audio files on the Ipod? If we can use other files and they need to be converted, what is a good cheap/free conversion program? Thanks!

If you already have other songs or audio on your computer you can go to File > Ad File to Library to import songs. If the songs have DRM on them (Digital Rights Management, here's a link good luck figuring it out :p) then you're limited to what you can do with them.....

For file types and converting, I believe iTunes default is to convert your songs into AAC when you import them. You can change what it converts to by going to Edit > Prefrences, click on the advanced tab, and click importing.
