Ipod/Itunes Question

Good day all. Apologies if this in the wrong forum.

My daughter go an Ipod for Christmas. I have no clue about these things (still using a portable cd player):D .
Are we stuck with Itunes or can we use othe types of audio files on the Ipod? If we can use other files and they need to be converted, what is a good cheap/free conversion program? Thanks!

I was wondering if she could continue to purchase her songs from Walmart and the put them on her Ipod. Just to make sure, I can us Itunes to do the converting?
I do not believe that you can legally convert directly from songs purchased from Wal-mart to files that can be loaded onto an iPod. The last I heard, Wal-mart's DRM is only compatible with Microsoft's Windows Media Player (WMP) and WMP will not load protected songs to an iPod. One option would be to see if she could use WMP to burn music CDs of her purchased songs. The burned CDs could then then be ripped in iTunes (or other iPod compatible software) and put on the iPod.
