Good day all. Apologies if this in the wrong forum.

My daughter go an Ipod for Christmas. I have no clue about these things (still using a portable cd player):D .
Are we stuck with Itunes or can we use othe types of audio files on the Ipod? If we can use other files and they need to be converted, what is a good cheap/free conversion program? Thanks!

You have a decent and easy to use program for converting tunes into formats supported by the iPod ..... iTunes, which you will most likely want to use to transfer songs to your iPod anyway (there are 3rd party alternatives but I've never had any troubles using iTunes so haven't bothered looking into them)

you do not need to use the apple AAC proprietary format used by Apple, most of what I have on my iPod is in mp3 format (it supports both VBR mp3 and constant bitrate mp3), chances are good that whatever format your songs are already encoded in will work fine in your iPod.

If you already have other songs or audio on your computer you can go to File > Ad File to Library to import songs. If the songs have DRM on them (Digital Rights Management, here's a link good luck figuring it out :p) then you're limited to what you can do with them.....

For file types and converting, I believe iTunes default is to convert your songs into AAC when you import them. You can change what it converts to by going to Edit > Prefrences, click on the advanced tab, and click importing.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if she could continue to purchase her songs from Walmart and the put them on her Ipod. Just to make sure, I can us Itunes to do the converting? Thanks!

I do not believe that you can legally convert directly from songs purchased from Wal-mart to files that can be loaded onto an iPod. The last I heard, Wal-mart's DRM is only compatible with Microsoft's Windows Media Player (WMP) and WMP will not load protected songs to an iPod. One option would be to see if she could use WMP to burn music CDs of her purchased songs. The burned CDs could then then be ripped in iTunes (or other iPod compatible software) and put on the iPod.
