I'm using Windows XP home. Cable with wireless router.

My internet connection fades away - but not completely. My email client is still able to log in and retrieve messages (pop3), I can still log into my ISP's SMTP server and send messages, and I can connect to a few internet sites (maybe 1 out of 15 that I've tried).

After restarting the computer, browsing with Firefox and with IE, everything is fine for 20 or 30 minutes. Then, without making any changes, the computer will not be able to connect to most websites. This is on the desktop, the only computer hardwired to the router.

I know my actual cable connection is fine - other computers I have are unaffected, still able to connect to any site. Also, I'm still able to connect to a couple websites and use an email client.

Do I have a mystery firewall?

I'm using Norton Internet Security. Windows firewall is disabled. I'm not sure what else is relevant...

Few ideas to try (I leave to someone else to analyze your Hijack This log):

1. Did you check to make sure cables between your cable modem and router and then your router and PC are securely fastened? If you have extra cables, try replacing the cables. Maybe one of your cables have gone bad.

2. A temporary fix, has helped when I have lost my cable connection:
Start-->Run--> type the word 'command'
This will get you a DOS prompt. Make sure you have a C:\> prompt. If not, type C:
At C:\> prompt, first type
ipconfig /release_all
hit enter, a series of numbers will appear, mostly zeros except 4th and last section.
then type
ipconfig /renew_all
hit enter, a series of numbers will appear, mostly zeros except 3rd and 4th sections.
type EXIT to get out of the DOS prompt and back to Windows. No need to reboot.

This process above refreshes the IP address you are connected to.

3. Shut down your computer. Unplug your cable modem and router for a minute or two. Plug your cable modem back in. Wait til boots up and the normal sequence of lights appear. Then plug in your router and wait a minute. Then restart your computer. This process often resets something out of whack with the equipment.
