I was wondering if someone could help me out. I use IE as my browser and when I put a shortcut on the desktop I usually get a red "E" for ESPN as my icon, a red "Y" for YAHOO as my icon, a "B" in a BLUE circle for the BOSTON GLOBE icon..etc. I don't know how or why but when I log onto my computer now all shortcuts are now show up as an "e" icon, the same one as the internet explorer icon.

How can change the icons back to what they were orginally. I appreciate all help.

Bonna Serra Giovanni!

I have this problem all the time and have never been able to fix it. It's not just with URLs it everythying. I find a good reboot does fine. If reboot doesn't work do the following.

I'm assuming you have Windows 98 when I give you this description. I don't know XP. You should always specify before posting. Go to Start>Settings>Folder Options (Might check under Control Panel in XP for either Settings or Folder Options)>Click on the "File Types" Tab>Find and select "URL: Hypertext Transfer Protocol">Click the "Edit" button>Click the "Change Icon" button>Open the X:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\url.dll file and click on the proper icon>Press OK>Press OK

If that doesn't work, find a file with the quirky icon>Right click and click on Properties>Click the "Web Document" tab>Click the "Change Icon" button>Find the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\url.dll file>Press OKs.

If that doesn't work, find a quirky one follow directions given above up to "Change Icon">Find the file that it gets the icon from and delete it. It should revert to the standard icon, though this move is a bit drastic and you won't be able to use this icon.

The icons you're referring to are called "favicons." They are normally replaced with the Windows default icon after a reboot.

If you would rather keep the favicon, follow the instructions on this page or download FavOrg from PC Magazine...it is not a free download.
