There are a couple of ways to do it, but this may be the easiest.

Download "Pop-Up Stopper" from this link.

This stops any pop up windows from opening. You'll see an icon in your system tray when the program is running and every time an advert or site tries to open, the icon gets a little X on it.
If you're trying to open a normal link that opens in a new window, holding down Ctrl when clicking the link bypasses Pop-up Stopper.
