when I tried to download IE7 from MS updates it would not load and I got an error message 0x05. While on the MS forum page one of the users posted to be happy it didn't load and to stay with IE6 or to use mozzilla fire fox instead. Many others seemed to be having download problems as well. My questions are what is firefox?(is it an internet browser / I have seen mention of it here in the forums) and am I truly lucky to have not had it download?(what is wrong with it? (besides not downloading) I believe I have updated to XPSP2 home( it shows up on my program menu for add or delete programs.) I have decided to get more into computers than just surfing so feel free to add to my knowledge base!!!

Here's my advice...DO NOT upgrade to IE7, just stay with your IE6 and install Firefox.
Mozilla Firefox is one of the best browsers out there on the market, and it's free.

Run...don't walk...to this installation link and download Firefox 2.0

Yes, you can have two browsers.
Yes, you can have both IE6 and Firefox open at the same time.

Enjoy your Firefox.

Good question...

Here's one way:

when you run Windows Update choose Custom and look to see if there is one for you to update to IE7 (or course you don't want to ok that one)...
click on the box next to the update..."Don't show this update to me again." and it will keep that one hidden in future updates.

btw...you'll spend many hours setting up (customizing) your Firefox the way you want it once you learn about adding new Themes and Extensions. Be patient and think of it as a learning experience.
There's plenty of help around (Support Forums, FAQs) when you have questions or problems.

LOL Firfox supporters always kill me, It is a very well made browser .
Some have issue with installing IE7.
Steps to take before updating (pretty much should do this for every/any update, most of the following info at least)
1. Do a disk cleanup, clean temp Internet files, empty recycle bin and defrag.
Start, my computer, right click on your hard drive, select properties, select tools, error checking click "check now"(chkdsk). and defrag
2. Run any spyware cleaning software you may have to clean that up. Run your antivirus program.
3. Remove anything you may have added to the browser such as Google toolbar ext.. (reinstall after update)
4. VERY IMPORTANT, disable your antivirus, Disable all spyware programs (they have many blockers on them such as homepage ext.. so they all need to be disabled)
5. Shut down any running program that does not need to be running. get it down to the bare min (just want XP running and nothing else)

Then download IE7
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.mspx

And install it.

If done correct you should have no issues with IE7, I personally have had only 1 install issue and have done so many I can't even count, and nobody has called to say they have an issue with it.

I personally like IE7
I still use Firefox sometimes but I also use IE7

Why is it that when someone gushes overFireFox, in spite of it's flaws, it's ok . . Whenever someone points out that IE7 works fine ( I have installed it on over 75 pc's so far with nary an issue yet ) he is accused of being on Gates payroll?

Most likely because Microsoft's ie7 is just a
poor copy of Firefox.

Hello I have also installed IE7 on many of a computer and have had no real problems with it, and actually I have had more problems with Firefox than I Explorer of any version. I also find that the people that complain most about any Microsoft product are the ones that can not fix anything hardly at all and just like to complain.

My solution for this is to follow schusterjo's post and get the download of IE& not the Windows Update and install the product.

The one real question I have about all of these people that are complaining about Microsoft products is, Why are you using Windows? Why not just go to Linux and use one of the many different versions of that instead?

That'd keep them off...but what I meant was to have a computer full of spyware and stuff...then install IE7 and compare it with a clean computer, see how the installs went.

And how to undo the problems after doing so without reinstalling IE7.
