This isn't a problem I'm having connecting to the internet, per se, but rather the following:

In my house, there are to computers. My family's machine, and my private laptop. Family connects by ethernet cable, me via wireless, if that could make a difference in the end.

Here's the problem. We actually have a good high speed connection. Some 400 MBPS on my Family's machine.

Sorry, rather HERE'S the problem. While the family machine is getting a wonderful 400 Mbps, I'm stuck sitting here with 50 mbps, and my internet is noticably slower than the other machine.

(My laptop is better than the tower in that it has a better processor, more ram, etc, so that's not the case.)

So here's my question. Is there some way to alot X mbps to a machine on the network, or some other way to get a better speed on my laptop?

1/ What router are you using?
2/ What is your quoted internet speed from you ISP?

My router is a Seimens speedstream-6250.

I'm not sure how many mbps we're pulling in, but we're using Canadian MTS Lightning.

Ok right The MBPS i need to explain a few things.
What you are seeing is not the actual speed of your internet, it is just the transfer rates of the packets between your computer and the router. And from what you have told me it sounds like the wireless transmits at 54MBPS.
Cable connections are always "quicker" if you like, then wireless ones.
So that isn't your true internet speed.
I was unable to find any information on what speed your ISP is providing but you can find out yourself, by going to the router admin panel, and checking your ISP connection settings, it should display your current down speed, which I believe can be anything up to 24MBPS in America????
YOu should be able to allow different users different amounts of bandwidth in the users panel.
Although I experience this problem myself.
When I use the internet for games or other high bandwidth activities, problems do start to occur on other wireless computers.
