internet connection virus

Dear Tech Suport Guys

I think my computer has been infected by a virus of some kind. My Norton anti-virus software was not able to remove it. The virus keeps screwing up my internet connection by adding a second connection. In order to get on to the internet I have to delete both connection set-ups - my original one and the second one that the virus added. Then I have to set up a new connection. This allows me to connect to the internet, but a short time later the virus adds the second connection and when I disconnect from the internet I can't reconnect by clicking my connection icon. I have to go through the delete and create new connection routine again.

When I try to connect I get an error message and a window pops up with a message entitled "**** up your connection v1.0"

I am using Windows XP Professional operating system.

I have included a hijackthis scan.

Appreciate any help you can give me.

First thing to do is move hijackthis.exe into a folder, don't run it from your temporary internet files. Make a folder on your hard drive, like c:\hjt.

Run HJT again and check:

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Restart in safe mode Click here to see how

Open My Computer. Go to Tools, Folder Options and click on the View tab. Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files". Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Now find these files and folders and delete them.

:eek: That file has a virus in it, so I can't open it. I'm pretty sure it's a malware thing so download Spybot http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download

Make sure to follow the instructions for updates prior to running the scan.

Click on "Search For updates" After the search has completed, the available Updates will be listed. Choose which Updates you would like to Download. Click "Download updates." The Updates will self install. The screen will change and the program will come back and be ready to use.

Sometimes the default Download Location will produce an Error. If that happens, look in the right panel. There you will find a small arrow next to the name of the current Download site. Click on it for a list of alternate sites. One of those should be able to retrieve the files you have selected.

Scan and reboot.

Next:

Download AdAware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by clicking on "Check for updates now", connect.

Click on Start, Use custom scanning options, Customize.

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"

"Scan within archives"
"Scan active processes"
"Scan registry"
"Deep scan registry"
"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL"
"Scan my host-file"

Click on Tweak,
Select scanning engine and click on "Unload recognized processes during scanning"
Select cleaning engine and click on "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

Then click "proceed" to save your settings.

Click on Next

Run the scan and fix everything.

Post another HJT log for review.

Dear cybertech

I have completed all of the above directions. I had trouble saving the scan file. If I saved it as a Word .doc file, I couldn't open it. If I save it as the default format (.log file) I can't attach it to my post.

Did you run CWShredder, the most current version? It should have taken care of this one.

Press CTRL+ALT+DEL and end task on this one. C:\WINDOWS\System32\window.exe

Run HJT again check:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [window.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\window.exe

Close all browser windows and applications before clicking "fix checked".

Now find the file and delete it.

This one is odd. Can you locate it and right click, properties and see what's in the version tab.

Dear cybertech

I ran the latest version of CWShredder I could find. It is version 1.57.0.0 I got rid of the line in the registry that you suggested. I was not able to find the file c:\WINDOWS\fiv.exe. What did you mean by " Press CTRL+ALT+DEL and end task on this one. C:\WINDOWS\System32\windows.exe". Here is the latest HJT scan.
