Internet connection and non-connection

1108 Views 9 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  mobo
Lately my internet connection "connects" but I get the page not found message and cannot do anything. I immediately disconnect and re-connect and everything works.

Is there a specific file on the computer that controls this sort of thing? As it works properly most of the time, I don't suppose there is too much wrong but these double connections are costing money and are very annoying. As far as I know my TCP/IP settings are correct and as I said, it connects properly most of the time. I want it to connect properly all of the time.

Thanks

Please get Spybot S&D to clear out any spyware.
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=mirrors

Install the program and open it.

Before doing any scanning click Online and Search for Updates .
Put a check mark at and install all updates .
Click Check for Problems nd when the scan is finished have Spybot fix all it finds marked in red .

Then after reboot :
Download 'Hijack This! http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the " scan " button will change into a " save log " button.
Press that, save the log , load it in Notepad, and copy its contents here. Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Rescan and put a check nst to each of these then close all browser windows and click "fix checked"

O1 - Hosts: 127.98.9.1 mail.bigpond.com.b9

O8 - Extra context menu item: Download with Star Downloader - C:\PROGRAM FILES\STAR DOWNLOADER\sdie.htm

Then reboot into safe mode and delete
C:\PROGRAM FILES\STAR DOWNLOADER
Its in the host file so you remove it . Your program will still work .

As for star downloader if you wish then keep it but i have read that it contains some adware..you decide but i would remove the host file entry.
thats certainly a strange one. I can't say I have see a situation where the host file was actually needed for anything..
