Hi,
I have a Toshiba Satellite a75, and I have started to lose my wireless conncetion intermittently. When I try to reconnect to my wireless network, it will (it takes about a minute to do so), and then 5-10 min later it is on longer connected. My roommates all are accessing the wireless connection without a problem on their laptops. I have tried to download the newest wireless drivers from Toshiab to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

Where is the wireless router/AP? Do you have any wireless phones? Have you repositioned the machine to where the ones are working reliably? Are you using Windows Zero Configuration for the wireless or the 3rd party client, probably Intel? If you're using the Intel client, disable WZC, the two will fight and result in the symptoms you describe.

The wireless router is in the same apt. and we have not had any trouble with the signal as far as I can tell. We all use our laptops in the same living room, and mine is the only screwy one.

Yes, we have cellular phones, no land line wireless/cordless. Still, we have had the same phones for some time, and this is a recent problem I am having with my connection.

I was running WZC and have since disabled it. NOt sure ablut any other 3rd party. Now, when I try to setup my wirelss, I get a message saying "windows cannot configure this wireless connection- yada yada..."
Where do I go from here?

What exactly do you see in Device Manager under Network Controllers? List all of them, or post a screenshot of that section of Device Manager.

Under Network adapters in my Device Manager, there's three: Atheros AR5004G Wireless Network Adapter #2, MAC Bridge Miniport, and Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC. Thanks.

Let's try a stack reset.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Are you sure the wireless adapter isn't turned off? There is either a switch on the side of the laptop, or a function sequence that turns on the RF for the wireless.

Yes, the wireless switch on the side of the computer is turned "On". Sorry about the late response, I was out of town for the weekend on business.

Yes, the internet works fine when I connect the Ethernet cord.

Have you tried downloading the latest drivers for the wireless? I don't know if this will help, since it used to work with the ones you have, but I'm getting desperate.

I have tried that. I was having a similar problem before I did, and now it's no improvement - maybe a bit worse as far as losing my signal. I guess before it was either on for a while and then it was unable to grt signal at times when my roommates' laptops could. Now it can get it whenever I connect, but loses it within 10 minutes without fail. Does that help? If you are stumped, what should I do? Who should I see? Is it possible that my wireless card is screwy?

It could be that the wireless adapter is failing. How old is this unit?

Perhaps you should post a HijackThis log for us to take a look at other possibilities.

Hey Champ,

I have a Toshiba too and began experiencing the same problem well over a year ago. My solution isn't a real "solution" but it allows me to stay connected when the computer is on:

>>Right click your wireless icon in the system tray, select "View Available Wireless Networks"
>>Go into Advanced Settings
>>Select the Wireless Networks tab
>>Check "Use Windows to configure my wireless setting"

Once the computer connects you, go back and uncheck the box.

This will keep you connected until you turn off the computer or the hard drive turns off (standby). At which point you'll have to do it over again.

Like I said, this isn't a fix, but it keeps your connection from dropping every fifteen minutes.

I've asked for help with this problem before on these forums and a couple others and didn't get a solution. Hope this helps you!

PS: If you have a Mat****a combo drive, be careful! They tend to overheat and will slowly break. I had to completely replace mine because it no longer read audio CDs, nor would it burn CDs and DVDs.
