On many occasions when I try to install various programs the Installshield wizard starts running and withing 1-2 seconds after the initial screen the program disappears with no errors or anything. I can never get the program or driver installed.

How do I fix this?

Disable your antivirus and firewall, then reboot. Once you are fully booted, check to be sure the antivirus and firewall are running. If this is of no help, uninstall - reinstall java.

In my add/remove programs list I have:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Updates 2, 4 and 6.

Java 2 Runtime Environment SE v1.4.2_05 and 06

Which of these do I remove and where do I get the replacements?

Thanks
Ed

You can try clicking Start then Run and type sfc /scannow click OK....makesure you leave a space after sfc
let it run, it will check your system files and if it finds corrupt one it will replace them....it may ask for the Operating System Disk...follow the prompts

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 10h

  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.

Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Re-Start your Computer

I removed all the Java programs and rebooted.

I then installed Java SE Runtime Environment 6. I did not see the version you mentioned listed. I then rebooted.

Java SE Runtime Environment 6 is now the only program listed in my add/remove programs list.

I reran the install and the Installshield still quit.

I will try the other run command you suggested.

Ed,
Have your recently upgraded from IE6 to Internet Explorer7?
Maybe this is not what's causing your problem, but it's worth examining.

The reason I ask, I had quite a dilemma trying to figure out why I was not able to get passed the InstallShield when trying to re-install an older version of MusicMatch Jukebox (v7.5).

It turns out that my newly upgraded IE7 was blocking the installations...I went back to IE6 and have had NO problem with any installation since.

It's a lot of reading leading up to the solution in my thread MusicMatch Installation freezes at InstallShield.

Just go to this post
where the problem was finally determined to be IE7 and the solution was to revert back to IE6.

Did you try running without the firewall enabled? IOW, be sure your firewal isn't blocking java.

Be sure you have java enabled in your IE - Tools - Internet Options - Advanced settings.

Hi Ed,

As I monitor your thread it still looks like you're having no success even after trying all the suggested remedies above.

And, I know you've ruled out the problem being associated with IE7....but (since I know for sure that IE7 does (in some cases) conflict with InstallShield based on my and other's experience)...
if "all else fails", how about reverting back to IE6 (uninstall IE7 instructions are in one of those threads I posted or here) and after rebooting trying the InstallShield installation again....just to finally rule that out.

Up to you...and I hope you find the solution soon.

:)
