This is a site that walks you thru a simulated XP installation:
http://www.echoproject.net/en/software/catalog.html

These are good guides to reinstalling XP . . you might want to print one for reference during the install.

You will likely have to reload drivers (Chipset first) and applications, If your XP installation disc does not include SP2, after the installation, you will need to download and install SP-2, while windows is clean. Prior to connecting to the internet be sure you enable the XP firewall.

If you want to save your files and settings, you can use the XP Files and Settings Transfer (FAST) wizard to create an image of them and save to cd or other removable media. These are good guides to using the FAST wizard. Just be sure you have an up-to-date antivirus before you re-instate them!

Chillr:

The best way to upgrade from 98SE to XP is to wipe out the hard drive and do a fresh install because it gets rid of all the remnants and problems from 98SE. If you go that route, you need to burn and save your download, songs, etc. to CD-R's first so you can transfer them back later.

Is your XP CD a full version CD or an upgrade version CD?

What is the processor speed, amount of installed RAM, and hard drive size in that computer?

Is there 2 separate C: and D: hard drives or is there 1 hard drive with C: and D: partitions?

Personally, I've never worked on a computer with 2 hard drives nor done any file transferring from one hard drive to another hard drive.

You can drag and drop your files from the C: Drive to the D; drive . . or you can use the XP Files and Settings Transfer (FAST) wizard to create an image of them and save to the D: drive. When you install XP, be sure to disconnect the second drive . . then reconnect after the installation is complete and you have an anti-virus program updated and running.

And, you keep talking about a "free file transfer dLL program ".

You do NOT want to be copying DLLs, only your data.

So, as pointed out the easiest way is with Explorer and just drag/drop them onto the empty drive.
And, you will need to re-install ALL of your programs. So, if you have ZIP installs, copy those files. And, find all your install CDs.

Remember to copy things like favorites and your address book.
