I am trying to set up a cd rom drive on my sons 486 computer it only has 1 IDE socket i have hdd set on master on lead socket nearest mobo & cd drive set on slave on other socket on lead but i can`t make the comp see it is there i have tried installing new hardware but comp can`t find any new hardware i tried installing drivers from floppy but get message saying drivers are not there or it asks for win95 cd but cd drive does not work in SETUP Harddrive 1 is set up right . Harddrive 2 can be set for either ( NONE or SCSI) or Custom but then it wants to know cyls, sects etc . I taken cd drive out of computer & started up then shut down & reinstalled it but there is no difference . I had a computer with only 1 IDE socket with a cd rom fitted before & this is a newer 486 than that one was so this should be possible please offer some advice please [email protected]

You may need real mode drivers for the cdrom.....what is the make and model?

When you power up the computer, you are able to open the cdrom drawer? You've got the gray ribbon correctly connected, with the red stripe closest to the power connector on the cdrom?

Have you tried booting with a windows 98 bootable floppy disk? Will the drive work from there?
