I have a desktop computer which doesn't boot up anymore. It currently has Windows ME on the drive. I want to reformat the drive and reinstall Windows.

I have taken the drive out of the computer and am going to put the drive into an external USB Hard Drive enclosure. Can I reformat/partition and install Windows 2000 Profesional onto this drive via the USB Hard Drive enclosure?

I'll be hooking the USB Hard Drive enclosure up to my laptop which is running Windows XP.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I wouldn't run a bootable OS from an external drive.
The performance hit would be noticable.

I'm NOT trying to run the OS from an external drive. I'm trying to find out if I can INSTALL a bootable OS (Windows 2000 Professional) onto an external drive and then put the drive back into my desktop PC after INSTALLING the OS to the drive. (It is an internal hard drive that I took out of my desktop and put in an external USB enclosure.)

My Question is: Is it possible to INSTALL (NOT RUN) Windows onto a Hard Drive that I put in a external USB enclosure? After installing Windows I would take the hard drive out of the USB Hard Drive enclosure and put the hard drive back into my desktop computer. I would be connecting the enclosed hard drive to my laptop computer via USB.

Thanks.

Please explain to me again why you don't simply install the drive into your machine and then install 2K onto it? It's real simple, you boot the 2K CD and start the installation process. What is the raindance with the USB drive all about?

Currently I cannot get the computer to boot to the hard drive. I've taken the drive out and put it in the USB enclosure and connected it to my laptop so I can get the data files off of the drive before installing Windows.

Get whatever files you need off the disk via USB external drive, put it back in your desktop, and then we'll start by diagnosing the problem from there.
Are you getting boot error codes? Does it not power on at all?
