I've installed Windows Defender on Windows 2000 so many times I can't count; but, recently I read an article in a magazine (forgot which magazine) that said Microsoft has fixed Windows Defender so it will not install on anything prior to WinXP SP2.

Alas, it is true. I just attempted it and I got that very message and it aborted.

Somewhere, I also saw an article (again, forgot where) that gave a workaround for this and made Windows Defender install work just fine on Windows 2000 SP4.

Does anyone know where I might find instructions for this workaround?

Thanks, I searched for such a page for over an hour with no luck.

The author of the article I read (in some magazine) seemed to be of the opinion that Microsoft went to extra steps to prevent its installation on 2000 as he said he had been running Windows Defender Final on 2000 for a couple of weeks with no problem at all.

According to him, it was just another push by Microsoft to make 2000 appear as obsolete as possible as soon as possible and there was no problem running it on 2000.

Sounds about right.

The instructions at your link worked out just fine. Windows Defender Final is now running on my Windows 2000 systems.

I won't load up IE7 until I absolutely have to; but, I'll bet it would also run on 2000 just as well. There isn't enough difference between 2000 and XP to make a difference. This is just a money push.

Glad you got it running. :D Yes, I agree, it's just MS trying to make XP sell more.....and I think they believe we wont figure out ways around this stuff...lol

IE has a long tradition of being the least secure browser of all that are available.

When I'm called out to clean a machine of adware/spyware, the chance I'll be back again is about 100% if they continue to use IE. When they are finally convinced to use anything else, that chance drops to the teens or less.

Microsoft may be taking security more seriously now than in the past; but, it will be several years before I'll trust them.

I have posted the defender installer on my website, already modified with the launch condition removed. its in a zip, also includes GDI+ which is necessary for windows 2000 to launch Defender. Directions included on where to extract the GDI+ files, completely idiot proof.

7 is more secure than 6 . . which is what I would think you would want. I don't use IE much ( still some sites that don't work with FireFox ), but since IE is so deeply embedded in the O/S, I want the additional security that IE7 offers . . using it is a different decision process

IE7's advanced fisher filter and other tools installed differently. IE7 isnt MSI rather its a full windows update and I havent ever seen it forced to install successfully on windows 2000. Microsoft wants windows 2000 to die out. They are never going to make a version for 2000. They wouldn't even make a patch to fix the new daylight saving time changes. The united states medical industry still runs 2000 on a large percentage of there systems. It cost them and estimated 1million dollars to pay there I.T. Guys to manually update all the PC's for the daylight saving time changes. If they don't care about the big business customers, then they certainly don't give a **** about the rest of us.

I read an article a couple of weeks ago online that estimated that 14% of the computers in the world were still running 2000 (I wish I had saved the article). MS wants all systems to die out except Vista. Unfortunately, Vista has not been as big of "hit" as MS expected, and now Steve Ballmer blames the lack of sales on piracy

I see now that Dell apparently got tired of missing sales and now offer 3 or 4 models with XP, although on the page they tell you Vista is the latest OS.

It's going to be interesting to see if any of the other big boy manufacturers follow Dell's lead and offer a choice.
