Evening All!

Once again my friend has asked me to help in ridding her computer of Adware, Browser hijackers etc.

I have deleted all I recognise, but there are a few persistent ones that I cannot get rid of.

I would be grateful if someone would analyse the HijackThis log below and advise on how best to clean up the comp.

Many thanks (as always) for any help given!

Files to check up:
  • services.exe
  • newdll.exe
  • system.exe
  • mc-58-12-0000080.exe
--------

Services.exe
When you ran HiJackThis did you have Services running? If yes then no need to worry, otherwise services.exe could be the 'W32.Randex.R' trojan.

--------

newdll.exe
newdll.exe doesn't need to be running, unless you've specified otherwise.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/allentries.html said:
Added by the W32/Sdbot-ZR worm. When started, this infection connects to a remote IRC server and waits for commands to execute.
--------

system.exe
system.exe appears to be the 'Trojan.Mitglieder.B' trojan. Check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run for "ssgrate.exe"="%System%\system.exe". If you have this value it's more then likely the trojan....MORE

--------

mc-58-12-0000080.exe
I have no idea what mc-58-12-0000080.exe is, if you don't need it, get rid of it or stop it running and see what happens.

--------

That's all i can spot at the moment. I usually miss a few things out so hopefully someone else will reply :).

Do the obvious, Run a virus & adware/malware scanner.

Print this and boot to safe mode (Start tapping F8 at the first black screen after power up)
Fix these with HJT

View Hidden Files
Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools, Folder Options and click on the View tab.
Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".
Uncheck hide extensions
Now click "Apply to all folders", Click "Apply" then "OK"

Delete these files

C:\WINDOWS\System32\newdll.exe

Delete these folders

C:\Program Files\DNS
C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! 3

START – RUN – type in %temp% OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete
Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp
Empty the recycle bin
Boot

Run ActiveScan online virus scan

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it. Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you can delete it yourself.
- Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan

Please give feedback on what worked/didn’t work and the current status of your system

O.K. everybody, thanks for your help, I'll get on with that and post a new log.

Evening Gibbs!
Services was not running when I ran HiJack this, so I'll check out the items you suggest.

Evening MFDnSC!
Will carry out items in your post and post a new HJT log

I think the Messenger Plus 3 was downloaded by my friends grandson. I ran the uninstall prog from Add/Remove programs and was given the option to uninstall an adware toolbar that it had installed and was persistent. It seemed to do the trick, and the Toolbar has now gone.
Does Messenger Plus 3 carry a further Payload?, also what is newdll.exe - I was suspicious of it, but couldn't find any info on it.

!! Thanks again all !!

Good Evening,

Thanks for the previous replies - sorry I haven't come back sooner, but was unable to visit my friend during the past week.
All done now though, and I've posted below a new HJT log taken after running through Adaware (again) and running Panda AV on line scan.

The BHO "Shorty", reappeared a few times after I had deleted it, but I found a few entries in the registry and deleted those in addition to the Folder holding the files and running HJT.
The comp is certainly running better, although I think Windows could do with a bit of a clean-up. I may try running Norton Windoctor directly from the CD - and hope it doesn't ****-up!

As always, thanks for the input.
