Hi. I just bought a new computer. I was stunned when I looked at the available memory. I only have 237 GB!

My old computer (from 2015) had over 900 GB!!!

What gives? Is there a way to increase the memory in my new computer? This new computer was manufactured in 2023 while my old one was manufactured in 2015. Why is there so little memory?

That's not memory, that's storage. It is on your hard drive or solid state drive . The only way to add more storage would be to replace or add another drive.

Manufacturers typically use a small SSD in their low end computers. Typically you can customize your order to use a larger drive.

The easiest way to increase space would be to add a second drive and use it to install programs and use for storing data (pictures, documents, etc.).

The best way would be to replace the drive with a larger capacity drive. This is a bit more involved, but not overly difficult.

Oh, it's one of those cigar-box size systems. Is it a Lenovo or HP or Dell? Please provide the model number, as James requested above. We'll see what room is available.

According to his "System Information" image, Giant Octopus appears to have this mini computer:

It does not appear to be very easy to upgrade your storage on this system unless you are comfortable opening it up and replacing a component and then installing Windows from scratch. Based on your inquiries, and please do not take offense, I'm not sure you are up to it. It is not very difficult, but you don't seem to be very comfortable working inside the system. (If I'm wrong, please correct me and I do apologize!)

Have you got a friend or relative who is technically competent?

Usually the NUCs are used (in my experience) for a classroom/meeting room setting as an IoT device. I had issues with those machines working as a Zoom Room device :/

As Mark mentioned, those typically are low end and will have base hardware specs (8GB RAM and 256GB storage space). You are more than likely will need to replace the current storage drive as there doesn't appear to have a second connector. You would need a M.2 2280 Type M (NvME) drive. In CA, the pricing seems to be about $50 CA for a 500GB drive and from $80-100 for a 1TB drive (based from prices on amazon.ca)

Oh boy. Yeah I'm not to most technical guy out there, so I wouldn't really know what I'm doing.
I guess I just flushed money down the toilet for a glorified paper weight.
It should not cost too much in labour to have someone install a larger capacity M2 form drive
it is only four screws to undo the base and then a rather simple install of a new M2 drive, but of course as has been said, not something to try on a brand new NUC if you have never done anything of that nature

page 7 and then 10 onwards

I am sure there are other guides but this one seems OK to me
How to Install the RAM and NVMe SSD in Intel NUC! Full Guide - YouTube

A solution for the time being and bear in mind that you still have 182GB space - is to connect an external SSD drive of say 1TB and use that for all your personal files of pics, docs, videos, music etc and your downloaded games etc .

That is the way to go if you do not wish to pay for someone to fit a larger capacity internal M2

I wish I could say you didn't overpay for that unit, but ... All's not lost.

Do you have a technical friend or relative? It's really not too difficult, but I wouldn't want you messing around inside your new system if you didn't have some level of comfort there.
