Just recently my computer started doing the annoying thing where you try to type, but it freezes for a couple of seconds and then all the typing you did finally shows up. It does it when I try to scroll down a page, too; everything freezes for a few seconds before my cursor is responsive again. I have a fairly high-powered computer, and no extraneous programs are running. When I keep Task Manager running, I can see spikey activity in the CPU when these freeze-ups occur. I keep things well-defragged and spyware-free. After reading one of your forums, I saw a recommendation to download "HiJack This" from MajorGeeks.com, one of the best sites of all time. So I downloaded it, and here's the log file. Anyone see anything that could be causing this annoying problem (which has happened 3 times while typing this post)?? Thanks in advance.

Might be a macro virus. I remember this happening (at the office) in the past, and I think that's what it turned out to be.

So, first, make sure you've got the latest patches downloaded and installed from the microsoft.com site, and any antivirus patches downloaded and installed.

When I ran into that problem in the past, I tried everything I could think of to solve it--and now I can't quite remember exactly what I did to fix the problem (sorry). It's been two or three years since that happened, too. Here are a couple of issues that I remember being part of that problem/solution.

One issue that came up was with a Norton Antivirus setting. I had to turn off the Scan For Viruses When Files are First Opened And Applications Are Launched feature because every time Word would open (launch), the antivirus software would kick in and slow things down. I didn't have a problem with turning it off because I had other settings on max. I never got any viruses by turning off that feature, and as I said above, that was a couple of years ago (and I work at a university, too!). Of course, that could be sheer dumb luck, but there ya' go.

I seem to remember that there also was a problem with Word and using Iomega Zip cartridges and an external Zip drive. Could have been a system conflict with the Iomega driver (make sure you've got the latest version), or simply that someone was trying to use Word to access and work with a file directly from the external cartridge/drive. If you're working off of a cartridge, try copying the file to your hard disk and work from there.

That's all I can think of for now. If anything else occurs to me, I'll post it.

Good luck.

You might try opening the file and looking to see if any macros are running. If you didn't put any in, then that might be the problem.

Open the file. Go to Tools/Macros/Macros. Check the section to show macros in all active templates and documents; the Normal (Global) template; and then document. These should all be blank (unless, of course, you put in a macro!).

If there's something in there that shouldn't be there, use Save As and save the document as rtf. You should get a message that rtf format will delete all macros. Do it and pitch the other one.

Well of course I just had my first cup of coffee and realized that your problem isn't specific to Word, but to Explorer (just Microsoft programs?) and possibly your system software and/or hardware.

So, what OS are you using, what programs are you using when this occurs and what hardware are you using? Has anything changed (added any hardware) that you can think of?

I'll check back after I've had my second (and maybe third) cup of coffee...

hi there, i hope somebdy reads this. well i have exactly the same problems, & i was pretty sure that they stem from a lack of resources. i have noticed that the tsk mngr jumps rom 0 to about 20% p.u. every second or so when i'm doing nothing at all (it seems that the prob is related to "page errors" in explorer.exe, which increase by 2 every second. is this normal?
is there something i can correct
my system is HP omnibook xe4100 -inter celeron 1Ghz & 240mo ram. thanx for ny help

I use McAfee for viruses, and several major anti-spyware programs to manually check for spyware almost daily. I don't use Word. The problem last occurred when I typed my original post in this forum. Every time the typing got "stuck" and reappeared several seconds later, I watched a huge jump in Task Manager. No other programs were up and running except the browser window in FireFox. The "HiJack This" log that I pasted in my original post shows all the system files.

hey, i've solved my problem. after uninstalling lots of programs that i don't use (creating some more space on my hard drive because i only have 250mo ram) i realized that my battery doesn't work on this laptop, never has & never will. so i rebooted but pulled out the battery. no more problem.

I have been having a similar problem for a long time now. Wherever I am typing, the application(browser, char client, word etc.) where I am typing freezes for a few seconds, but other applications are running fine during the freeze.
I have scanned my computer for viruses and spywares but I find nothing. And it doesn't seem to be a hardware problem as the problem never occurs on linux on the same computer but is very frequent on windows.
I have posted below the HijackThis log:
