Please help.
I am running Win98SE. Everything used to work until this morning. For some reason unknown to me, my Win media player (version 9) only plays sound, no video. This happens for all video file formats (mpg, avi, wmv).

At the same time, my IE6 is acting up as well. It won't allow a link to open a new window. (When a link on a web page that specifies opening another window, nothing happens. However, if a link just shows the new page in the same window, it does what it supposed to.)

I suspect these two problems might be related. The only thing I can think of that might caused to problem is that I installed a Hex editor yesterday. The editor also required Visual Basic 6 runtime module, and I installed it.

In trying to fix the problem this morning, I uninstalled the Hex editor and checked that the VB module is not loaded. However, that didn't solve the problem.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I am suprised win media player 9 would run at all. It was designed for xp. I would try to use add/remove programs and try to repair IE6 or just remove it and install it again. But I think there might be a spyware problem. Use AD Aware to remove it.

Thanks for the advise.
I checked for spyware using both Ad Aware and Spybot, found nothing. I then reinstalled IE6. It is still not functioning correctly. Any other ideas? Thanks.

I am still trying to solve the problem. Again, any help is greatly appreciated.

Additional progress:
I tried to repair IE6. This is what I got:
IE6 cannot be repaired due to the following errors:
An error has occurred while setting up "c:\windows\system\oleaut32.dll" This error has been logged, the installation will continue.

However, when I clicked the "OK", nothing happened.

I also downloaded HijackThis and ran it. This is the scan result:
