This is about a Win98SE PC on an NT4 network that since a nimda attack (and cleansing) won't any longer download an .exe file from any internet location. Running IE5.5 SP2 with all settings set for low security and download enabled. It will download a .ZIP file, just not any .exe! Running Norton System Works 2002 with email protection and NAV, but same symption occurs with Norton disabled. Can't find any settings in anything that would cause a protective 'block' to download an .exe off the 'net.

When trying a download of an .exe, a pop-up IE occurs that stays white, then after a bit includes the small icon for a picture that hasn't yet loaded (little geometric shapes). No error messages occur, just the pop-up and that's the end.

I checked file associations, and exe is still associated with Application and the default MIME/x-msdownload. This occured with IE5.5 and also after patching to IE5.5 SP2.

All ideas welcome! thanx.
