I am having a problem with connecting to the internet. I have 2 computers with 1 of them only having a problem. On the problem computer I can send and receive emails and use Skype but cannot access any HTTP sites. I have tried everything in the Microsoft Help and Support "You receive an error message in Internet Explorer: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. The only thing that worked was that we were able to get on the internet in the safe mode. All the instructions after that point did not work. Any help would be appreciated.

Please click here to download and install the HijackThis installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

Well it should be.

Open the same Services window and put a check on the "Hide non-Windows services" box and see if other services you need are missing.

My guess is that you also have some Windows services not running when they should be.

Check these Services are Started by clicking on Start > Run > and typing services.msc

  • COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper
  • Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations)
  • Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing.
