This is a puzzler. I have a desktop computer with WIN98SE updated with Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) as the browser. Recently I had cause to uninstall everything from my hard disc and then clean reinstall from the WIN 98SE CD. For a brief time I could readily access web sites with no error messages. Then I started to get the messages: "The page cannot be displayed" and "Cannot find server." At that point, by clicking the Refresh button, the site appeared almost immediately. This has become standard procedure ever since.
Now the install process first formats the hard drive and so the problem is not likely caused by a virus or by a corrupted registry; nor is there a firewall. When I use Netscape or Opera as the default browser the problem does not occur. When I try IE5 or Avant (IE-based) as the default browser the same error messages appear and, once again, the Refresh button accesses the web site.
It seems to me that this points to an IE software problem. The MS Knowledge-Base "fixes" offer no joy. Questions: Why is the Refresh button required to access a web site when using an IE browser? Is there a reliable fix for this problem other than dumping Internet Explorer in favor of a non-microsoft browser?
