I have been having problems with playing audio cds/dvds, and I think I may and lost something out of the control panel.

The last thing I did was uninstall something (either the display driver or disk drives), and rebooted, as it said in the windows help, but everything is in place in the device manager .. at least that I can tell

I have attached a picture so you can see what I mean.
There is a gap between Phone and Modem and Power Options

Hi Claymore :)
I probably could if I could remember which one I uninstalled

I was certain it was either the display driver or disk drives I uninstalled.
Both of those are in the device manager.

I tried system restore but the icon was still missing so I reversed it.

I have fiddled with the file viewing options and now it al looks normal, but am I missing "Portable Media Devices"
It's not there, should it be?
Also should there be a "details" drop down menu on the left like in other folders?

I CAN play Flash games, Windows Media Player and Music Match.

I really should stop messing with things I know nothing about

Hello again,

You can live without it. If the computer doesn't have any portable media ports - slots to plug in flash drives etc., it would be listed. Maybe you don't have any of these. On one my computers that doesn't have these, that item is not listed in Control Panel. If you installed a internal (or external) card reader, for example, that item might show in Control Panel. All it does is show the drive letters of the drives. If you have such drives, you could try the 'Add Hardware' applet in Control Panel and let Windows search for new hardware.

Luck!

Hi Claymore :)

Sorry for the delayed reply.

I tried Add Hardware and couldn't work out what to do

I opened the Add Hardware Wizard, and clicked next, it starts searching.
Then I get "Is the hardware connected"
If I check YES and click next I get a list and at the top there is MTP Device with a yellow exclamation mark next to it.
If I highlight that and click next I get "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" to start the troubleshooter click finish.

In the troubleshooter I open the device manager and under Portable Devices, MTP Device is there with the yellow exclamation mark.

Should I uninstall this so it can reinstall it?
Is this what I was missing in the control panel?
I swear there was nothing in the Device Manager last Friday with this yellow exclamation mark

Hi again :)
I jumped the gun a little and uninstalled the MTP Device
I restarted my laptop and then kept getting a continuous popup near the clock saying new hardware found. It was the MTP Device, but when I tried to click on the little x to close the box it kept reopening
The only way I could stop it was to do a system restore to take me back to a check point from yesterday.
Now when I open the device manager, niether Portable Devices or the MTP Device is listed.

Hello again,

This "MTP device" - is it an mp3 player connected via USB?

If so, you could try this rather drastic fix. I used something similar a couple of years ago with some success. This routine is from a very experienced person at this forum.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines (copy/paste) and save it as FIX.REG

-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"

-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View => Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and leave enough parts for those to function.

Hi again Claymore :)

I have no idea
The only things I have that use the USB's are my camera and mouse. Both of these things still work.

I honestly think I should leave it all alone now, it seems the more I try to change things the more weird things happen..lol

I want to thank you for trying your best to talk me through all this stuff, it seems that everything works as it should.
Whatever device it was, obviously wasn't too important.

Thanks again

Talking about weird things happening.

After I wrote my last post I went to the Device Manager and was looking on the net for updates for my display adapter (ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M Series)
I only found 1 page that had Overview and Specifications.http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_14603_14628,00.html?redir=CHIP27
HTML:
I read that DirectX 9 was part of it and opened a new window and went to Microsoft to have a look/read.

I get a pop up window (that I've attached) saying I had to restart because hardware settings had changed.

Have I caused this
Does this have anything to do with this post or should I start a new one
