Well yeah with the os . The availability of a internal + the cost isnt really a option (not in the US) so I was hoping maybe use a external. When I try to load a os it say it cant find the hhd,but the disc checking software finds it

You can't boot Windows from an external drive without a kludge patch, and the performance would really suck anyway. Laptop drives are pretty cheap, why consider an ugly option like that?

Have you tried resetting the bios to default values. Do this by entering bios. Thinkpads do not react well the removal of the CMOS battery. From experience if you do that the system will become useless and the only fix is to return it to the factory to have the Motherboard repaired as they call it (they reprogram the bios). After resetting Bios to defaults set your HDD to auto then your boot order to CD, Floppy(if equiped), HDD. THen see if you can install the OS on the Internal hdd. This is the route I had to take on my ThinkPad G40.

On my G40 you pressed F11 on bootup to restore the system to factory condition. This uses the hidden directory on the HDD to reinstall the OS and all the factory programs. You will lose any programs or data saved to your HDD though in this process. F11 may be wrong for your system I am working from memory here as I no longer have the G40.

I can enter the bios but the arrow keys do nothing, so I hit f9 for bio defaults. It will boot from cd or floppy. It starts loading windows but then aborts because it cant find the hard drive. When I formated the drive I think it said it was writing 0's. The disc utilities software see's the drive
