I think my DVD writer might be toast...

When I try to burn a disc with imgburn, it gives me an error saying "Failed to write sectors: Power Calibration Area Error." I have tried 2 different CD-R, a CD-RW, a DVD-R, and a DVD+R DL discs and they all give the same result.

When I try to put in a DVD, it just acts like its trying to read the disc for a long time, and then it will act as though there's no disc in. I have tried a burned DVD and a retail DVD.

I have tried burning at slower speeds... no difference.

Anything else I can try?

you tried one of several possible ways to help with the issue. for others such as, Disable IMAPI Service (Work's in most cases) have a look a this link:
http://www.megaleecher.net/Fix_Power_Calibration_Error#axzz4CVQEdYmm
That error typically indicates a media or burner issue.

If the drive can't even recognize media, I'd say the drive is faulty.

Yeah, that's the same page I read. I have no IMAPI service running on my PC.

I would suggest using a different program and checking if the issue resolves. imgburner, cdburnerxp are just two that work well. also the info tool from nero can ID the formats for the romdrive.

bobs-here do you mean imgburn rather than imgburner? If not, post an url to the program.
As far as imgburn, that's what the OP tired to use.
ive used, cdburner for years and it works very well and worth trying:
https://cdburnerxp.se/help/Intro/cdburnerxp
imagburner is in fact a typo. but imgburn portable is the version intended, as it does not install and has the edge over the installed version:

I've attached the info from Nero to this post, if you think that it will help.

Just a thought, but do you think it matters that the DVD drive is on it's side? The tray on the drive holds the disc just fine, and everything seems to function fine...

The computer case holds the DVD drive in a vertical position.

Ok..uncheck the box for "Perform OPC Before Write" in ImgBurn (on the Settings, Write tab) and to un-check the box for power calibration. It's not necessary. also, the romdrive has an emphasis to use +r disc rather then -r media. i use verbatim or 8x Taiyo Yuden or even sony disks as a brand and try to avoid junk media.

its not unknown for 50-count spindles to have bad batches.also, the message is, being that lighter dyes are less 'skippy' imo.

an equivilant to the Disable IMAPI Service is not available but there is the disable a CD Burning Group Policy. worth a try and easily toggled:
  • Click "Start," type "Gpedit.msc" into the search box at the bottom of the Start menu and press "Enter."
  • Navigate to the "User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer" folder in the left pane of the group policy editor.
  • Double-click the "Remove CD Burning Features" setting in the right pane of the group policy editor.
  • Click "Enabled" in the properties window.
  • Click "OK."
try the burning again and if not return to enable.

but if things are not improved, its not unknown known for one of the two lasers to start failing, commonly the burn laser. this could be the first signs

nothing to be lost by trying. if it works by laying the machine flat, its all good. but plenty to eliminate in post10#

although the eventual suspect will point to the cdrom drive and whether its past its best.
"Perform OPC Before Write" is already unchecked. I don't see a box for power calibration.

I disabled the CD Burning Group Policy.

imgburn still gives me a power calibration error:

as said there is the media discs to eliminate and though the burning speed has been mentioned, i see it was set to burn to max (x40). burning speed can be set lower to test purposes.

Well, unfortunately I don't have any other discs to try. I have another PC that I can burn discs with, and these drives aren't that expensive. I'm giving up on it. Thanks a lot for all of your help, I really appreciate your time.

your welcome :)
A drive that holds disks in a vertical position does not have any effect on the burning. One of my computers uses a burner vertically and I've burned on it since 2009. If it goes bad, I also have a portable burner that I could attach to it and use.

I bought the portable burner because we have 3 netbooks in the house that do not include burners and an old desktop that only has a CD-ROM drive so I can attach the portable unit to it to load DVDs.
