I think my computer is dying..

Hi guys,

Sorry for the vague post title but I'm not too sure where to post this question as I am unsure as to what exactly my problem is..

I am currently running a rather old PC system on Windows 7. Its lasted me a good 5 years or so now however I'm feeling it may be on its last legs.

I primarily use this computer for gaming as I've been a game for quite sometime and this has never been an issue however, just lately when attempting to play any games or doing any too strenuous my PC cuts out and restarts. Sometimes its not able to reboot straight away so will restart itself again.. Its almost like a drunk person that falls over and attempts to get back up but cant? In the end I turn it off and wait a little while for it to blow over.

Now since this has been happening the display on my PC has gone a little weird too. Take a look at this screenshot:

The only issue that I would say it could be is that the computer is just a bit too old now, but it seems like a very sudden downfall in mechanics to be an age issue. I have just bought a new extension cable for my computer (admittedly its a rather cheap one), could this have anything to do with my PC cutting out?

Sorry to be so vague, but Im at a loss for words to explain any better.

If theres anything I could do to help you guys figure out a potential problem, I'd be grateful if you can let me know.

Thanks for any help/advice in advance :)

Hello iRichyy,

Welcome to TSG!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

First, I do not see any issue with the screenshot you provided other than uTorrent running. While not inherently a problem, P2P programs are notorious for spreading malware.

Let's see the following:

TSG Information Utility
  • Download and save the TSG System Information Utility (SysInfo.exe).
  • After it's been downloaded and saved, double-click it to run it.
  • Information about your computer will appear.
  • Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire text here.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

MsConfig
  • Press and hold the Windows button + R on your keyboard.
  • In the Run box, type MSCONFIG and hit Enter.
  • Click the "Startup" tab.
  • Write down only the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.
  • If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.
  • Submit those names here in a vertical list.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

What's the make and model of the computer we are working on?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lastly, do you see any symptoms of malware?

Power supply and over heating are prime suspects. Memory and hard drive secondary suspects.

And, yes, "power supply" could include an extension cord or power strip.
Thanks for both of the replies.

Here's the results for the System Info Utility

Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5400 @ 2.70GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 10
Processor Count: 2
RAM: 4095 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT, 512 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 476837 MB, Free - 90901 MB;
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC., P5KPL-AM IN/GB
Antivirus: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011, Updated and Enabled
----------------------

As I mentioned on my first post, I've been a gamer for sometime and have been victim to a computer quite literally overheating and smoking on me before, so my initial thoughts were the power supply however I was unsure if extension cable would make a difference so I'll be looking at changing that for sure.

The screen shot was to point out how blurry my display is.. The uTorrent isn't a concern at this point as I have no malware suspicions.

Given the information from Speccy, it doesn't appear to be an overheating issue but it may still be another hardware component TerryNet listed in post #4.

---------------------------------------------------

Note: Modify the list below if you recognize any pieces of software you know you want to launch at startup. We are not deleting programs, just making it so that programs don't launch at startup and unnecessarily use resources.

MsConfig Edit
  • Press and hold the Windows button + R on your keyboard.
  • In the Run box, type MSCONFIG and hit Enter.
  • Click the Startup tab.
  • Remove checkmarks from the following entries:

    Apple Push
    Adobe Acrobat
    DivX Media server
    DivX Update
    Java
    iTunes
    PMB
    CmiCnfg Dynamic Link Library
    Registry Monitor
    PixArt Camera Try
    TBHostSupport
    iCloud
    API Support
    uTorrent
    WinampAgent
    Adobe CS4 Service manager

  • Click OK.
  • Reboot the machine.
  • Once in Windows, you will receive a prompt alerting you of the changes we made.
  • Place a checkmark in the box and click OK.

Sorry for the delayed reply Shooter.

As instructed I have duly changed the settings in MsConfig. I wasn't given a prompt on start up though? Ive checked MsConfig again to make sure the changes were still in effect and they are.

My display is still blurry though.. Any thoughts on that one?

Must admit my computer did start up a lot quicker though..

What monitor do you have?

What is connecting it? VGA cable? DVI? HDMI?
So.. I may/may not have just been sat with my head in my hands.

.. I took out my cables and reattached just to make the connection stronger.. Problem sorted. Blur has now gone.

I think I may cry.
Haha, well I am glad you found the problem.

Do you have any other questions/problems?
None at the moment Shooter.

But If I do in the future I know where I'll be coming, you've been very helpful.

Thanks again.
Glad I could help, and you are welcome. :)
