i have been waiting about 3 years to play the sequel to deus ex. i bought the invisible war and found i needed to get a new video card. did that, bought a nvidia geforce fx 5200 (the cheapest recommended by the game's FAQ 'shrug'). started playing.
during play the game randomly shuts off. there is seriously no pattern. except that it shuts off at points that really frustrate me, but i think i may be imagining that. there is no error message, there is just my desktop looking smugly in order at me.
my system=
self built (bad idea for idiots like me, we make frankensteins).
amd athelon 2600
msi k7n2 delta mainboard
hercules gamesurround muse xl (bad old card, i know)
1 512 stick ddr ram
windows xp, fully updated.
i use a couple of usb devices, including a nostromo n52 gamepad.

i have updated drivers, i have turned off every background process that i safely can before starting the game (including virus scans). i've had this problem with neverwinter nights, the sims, and age of mythology (which are the only ones i've played with this system). i even resorted to a fresh windows install (2 days ago. deus ex is the only game i've tried since then).
i swept for spyware and viruses, which led to the fresh install after i got rid of 72 spyware and 4 viruses. my system, though clean, still felt so dirty).
so where do i start? i can't just type into google invisible war shuts down because everything tells me to do the things i've already done. erg. erg.
any help would garner great love.

ooo, and i did the game's patch, and i forgot to mention that i have a huge hard drive. fast too. western digital i think. i didn't cheap out on that part.
and i was just curious about the "no hacks" rule. i've seen forums closed when it's just about using properly bought media to it's fullest extent on your pc. everyone i know copies a game they are really interested in to their hard drive for the "no cd" function just because it runs better. i don't think of that as a hack...
what about tweaking game files (that you have already properly bought or properly borrowed from someone who is finished playing it). can we talk about that? it's a hack but i feel it's just personalized cheating. and last i checked perfectly legal. i think.

What kind of power supply are you using? It sounds like a faulty/weak power supply to me, or an overheating problem...try running it with the side of the case off, and a fan pointing towards it.

i don't even remember what power supply, to be honest. i have two fans internal, and moniter my cpu temp.
i did get a new soundcard, and that seemed to solve about 75% of the crashes. now instead of going out every 5-20 minutes it goes out every couple of hours, and i can live with that. i guess no one can expect a 100% stable system.
