I cannot set the video resolution above 640 × 480 with 16 colors. I reinstalled XP Pro on an Inspiron 1100 and now I can adjust the monitor. I am installing the updates now. I was just wondering if anyone else encountered this and what they did to fix it.

Your video drivers are not properly installed. You need to update those. Since it's a Dell machine, I'm assuming you are using the vga card that was shipped with the Dell. You will need these drivers. These drivers are the most recent (October 04)

I had an issue with Win 98 when the vga drivers were not installing properly, and on each restart it would revert back to 640x480. Usually updated drivers or installing Win 98 over the original installation worked..

 anytime. Service Packs has (should have) no effect on drivers. Your problem was the system not installing the drivers properly. If you are using Microsoft's original XP disc and not the Dell supplied CD then the installation will not install the right drivers and default to VGA driver.

It wasn't the Dell disc. There was the problem. I was wanted XP Pro instead of home so I used a different XP disc

Thanks again
