I am using windows 10, I have been working on a word doc for weeks deadline now. I saved it and switched my comp off (No, I didn’t back it up. Yes I’m a complete a-hole) upon switching my computer on the next morning the file was gone. Three shortcuts displayed a notification informing me that the shortcut has been changed, moved or deleted. I have spoken to Microsoft who told me it was not their problem. I have spoken to one professional who informed me I was dumb and should have backed it up and another that took remote access of my computer searched recovered auto save files, ran a recovery program searching for deleted file... he spent over an hour and said he’s never seen anything like it before it’s like the file never existed..... please please please can someone help me

Did your machine updated to Win 10 1809? I know that's certainly been causing consternation for other users who've lost files. Where was the original document stored on the machine? It's a long shot but if your machine did get upgraded to 1809, you could try looking through the C:\Windows.old folder.

I know you'll be feeling bad enough about not having adequate backups; I think we've all been there, at one point or another. Suffice to say: you should look at setting up a regular backup process to ensure this doesn't happen again.

Turn on Settings > Update and Security > File History, It will make automatic backups periodically to a USB stick I think,
