The quickest and easiest way might be to upgrade to pro since you have the cd.:) After windows checks your system it will give you an option to upgrade or fresh install. Select upgrade and it should fix the problems and you won't loose anything.:D

Boot to the CD and install your OS. If possible, do an NTFS format option which is available from the installation interface. Of course, if you have critical data that you can't backup, don't do it.

If you have some files you need to save, you can boot into the recovery console and copy them to another partition / disk or a floppy if small enough.

I have never tried to repair home with a pro cd, however I doubt that it will allow you to repair.

Before doing any install, I would download and run the hd mgf's utility for checking the drive.

The hd utility is downloaded from the mgf's site. You will need to know what brand of hd you have ie Western Digital, Maxtor, etc.

The file you download makes a bootable floppy and puts the utility on it for you. Restart your computer with the disk in the A drive and the program should start. On of the options is to check the drive.

im not sure this problem is occuring at my cousins and im here at my house its not a far trip but once i find a solution i will have to print it and follow instructions their.

For that microsoft site they suggest me use my winxp home cd to boot into recovery console but the thing is i dont have my cd people are suggesting i upgrade to xp pro but iv'e heard problems occuring with upgrades and the best way to go with it is clean install well i dont mind their is just one document i want to back up, it contains my cd keys for all my stuff.

everything else i have a cd. But what about drivers and stuff. I hate going to manufac sites and searching for each and every friggen driver and downloading it and reboot and so on. Most of the time im not even 100% sure if what im downloading is the rite driver. Is their a program that saves them and lets me back them up so that on next install i may use them or sumthin?

Yes, I have heard of a program that "Saves" your drivers. I have never used anything like that so I really cannot be of much help in that respect.

As to your doc, you can boot with your xp pro cd. Boot into the repair console and copy the doc to a floppy. If it is just a txt type file, it should fit on a floppy without a problem.
