Hi All,
I've posted on here before and had great success getting problems solved so I'm really helping somebody can bail me out now. I don't _think_ that I have a virus/spyware problem that I can identify but there's something definitely not right with my computer. Here are the symptoms as best as I can describe them:
- everything is running _very_ slowly. Windows takes longer to load and, once loaded, things generally seem to be running/loading progressively slower - and I'm not trying to do anything fancy. The only programs I really use are explorer, msoffice, winamp, and divx, that's it.
- I've noticed that, often times, when things get really slow the process EXPLORER.EXE is hogging upwards of 97% of the CPU, the CPU is just maxed out. However, sometimes things move fairly slowly and this doesn't happen, so I'm confused.
- Tons and tons of disk reads - sometimes even when I'm not actively running a single program the green disk access light on my laptop goes a solid green, and you can definitely hear the disk being read from (by the way my computer is a Dell Inspiron 5100, 6 months old, if that matters at all).
- I notice a process running called "Support.exe" which the win tasks 4 library indicates is a security risk (http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/support/)
- Earlier I noticed that the process CIDAEMON.EXE was hogging up a lot of CPU time so after reading up on it a bit on this site I disabled the associated service, which if anything seems to have made things worse. I also modified several other of my service settings from their XP Home defaults to Black Viper's "safe" configuration (http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm) in the hope that would help. Obviously, it hasn't...
That's all that I can think of at the moment to report - basically my computer's performance seems to be degrading at an alarming rate and I'm hoping somebody can shed some light on the problem. Any suggestions very much appreciated!! Oh yeah, here is my latest HT log as well:
