HP Pavillion laptop won't boot up - says there is no OS?

Hi everyone.
I've stuck this on this forum because it kinda involves installing issues with Windows (namely the fact that I had Windows and now it's clearly saying I don't have that or any OS) but if it's in the wrong place, let me know where to put this instead.
I have a HP Laptop that's been working fine but all of a sudden, I let my mate use it the other day and there's been an issue on boot up ever since - namely the fact that it won't boot up!
It doesn't look too promising because when I boot it up, it brings up a black screen which says 'Boot device not found. Please install an operating system on your hard disk. Hard disk (3F0).
And then there's an option fo system diagnostics.
Any help with what I need to do cause it was working fine and it had an OS and I don't want to go out and buy a new one if this can be fixed another way.

Cheers

The likely scenario is that the hard drive went bad. Unless your friend that borrowed it REALLY did some damage to it from a software standpoint, its likely a failed HDD.

Open the BIOS menu and see if it detects a hard drive in the boot list.

In order to restore the use of the PC you will likely need to install a new hard drive and use a premade Recovery Media that you created or you will have to acquire one from the computer's manufacturer.
What's the complete model number of that HP Pavilion laptop?
What's the exact serial number and product number on it?
What country do you live in?

I opened the diagnostics and ran a memory test which it 'passed' and I then ran a hard drive check and both the quick check and extensive checks wouldn't run because it said 'SMART Check: Not Installed' and 'Short DST: Not Installed.'

Not sure if I have pre made recovery media. How would I install a new hard drive?

Haven't the foggiest - how do I find out? Hahah!
I like in the UK.
I checked the bottom of the laptop itself and it doesn't say if it's a Pavillion or what model number but it says the serial number is CND6261Z32 and the product number is W9V76EA#ABU
I can pretty well guarantee you that if its saying "Not Installed" on the HDD tests that's because as far as the system is concerned theres no hard drive installed,, indicating that the current hard drive has failed.

Since you don't have the recovery software, you will need to acquire it. Frank is good at assisting on locating recovery media , so I will leave you with him.

In order to install a new hard drive on the laptop, normally its just a simple matter of turning the laptop over and removing a few screws and pulling out the old one and then inserting a new one.

At this point you would then boot the laptop with a recovery media in the disk drive or the USB drive, depending on the type of recovery media you acquire.

Ahh damn that's no good. Hopefully Frank can help me out with that then but cheers for your help as well. Hard drives expensive or no?
No, not IMO. I would recommend probably a 500Gb or higher as its not really cost effective to get a smaller one. I would check the Egg for some.

Here's a link for a similar product:

According to that serial number and product number, you have THIS HP Notebook - 15-ba065sa which is no longer under warranty.
According to its product specifications section, it came with Windows 10 Home 64-bit and came with a 1 TB(931 GB) SATA hard drive.

I wasn't able to find any instructions on how to remove/replace the hard drive in it.
I also wasn't able to find any locations on where to obtain the recovery media disc kit/USB thumb drive for it.

Assuming that laptop still has a hard drive in it and has an intact HP Recovery Manager, THESE Windows 10 recovery options may be helpful to you.
If all else fails, contact HP customer support.

Personally, its worth a shot to try to create recovery media. BUT In my experience once the HDD starts to fail all you will get from creating recover media with a dying HDD is bad sectors.
Sounds like your mate dropped it, that will kill a hard drive quick.
